Installation walk-through for 045209

Lutron document 045209 gives nine steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Tape measure
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • 1/4 in hex-head driver
  • Power drill
  • Level

Fixings

  • 8 mounting screws, #8 x 1.75 in (supplied)
  • 2 cable ties, 4 in (102 mm) (supplied)
  • 2 spare retaining screws, #6 x 0.25 in (supplied)
  • 2 jamb sub-brackets (supplied)
  1. Check the box and the crew

Confirm the box holds the drapery, two jamb sub-brackets, mounting screws, cable ties and spare retaining screws. Lutron document 045209 calls for two people on any system wider than 4 ft (1.2 m).

Check: All parts and tools are on hand and a second installer is there for a wide system.

  2. Drill for the cable

Hold the sub-brackets in position to find where the cable hole should go. Bring the cable out of the wall, ceiling or jamb on the drive side, and leave a length exposed.

Clearance: 12 to 18 in (305 to 457 mm) of exposed cable

Check: The cable comes out on the drive side within reach of the drapery bracket.

  3. Set out the sub-brackets

Place the two sub-brackets in a horizontal line, as far apart as the specified bracket-to-bracket dimension.

Set them above the top of the window opening so the open drape clears the view. The fabric then sits 1.50 in (38 mm) from the sub-bracket edge.

Clearance: 12 in (305 mm) above the top of the window opening

Check: The spacing matches the specified bracket-to-bracket dimension.

  4. Fix the sub-brackets

Level the sub-brackets and screw them up with fasteners that suit the surface. Lutron draws a wall mount and notes that a jamb mount is also possible.

Check: Both sub-brackets are level and firm.

  5. Hook the drape on

Remove the retaining screws from the drapery brackets. Hook the lip of each drapery bracket over the top of its sub-bracket.

Swing the drape down until each bracket's lower part rests on the sub-bracket.

Check: Both drapery brackets sit flat against their sub-brackets.

  6. Route the cable

Lead the cable out of the wall, ceiling or jamb and pass it between the drapery bracket and the sub-bracket. Keep it free so the brackets do not trap it.

Check: The cable is not pinched anywhere between the brackets.

Warning: Lutron document 045209 says plainly not to pinch the cable.

  7. Center and secure the drape

Slide the drape until it is centered, then fit and tighten the retaining screws on both brackets. Lutron requires the screws to be fully tight.

Check: Retaining screws are in and fully tight on both brackets.

Warning: Lutron warns of injury from falling heavy objects if the drapery brackets are not firmly attached to the sub-brackets.

  8. Level the drape

Turn the leveling screw to lift or drop the idler side of the drape. Stop when the drape is level.

Check: The drape is level across the opening.

  9. Wire the drive and set the limits

Lutron document 045209 does not give the wiring or the limit steps. Follow the Basic Wiring and Setup Guide packed with the Kirbé system for wiring and the open and close limits.

Check: The drape runs to its open and close limits without obstruction.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045209

Requirements Lutron states in 045209

What the guide requires for a Lutron shade before and during installation:

In the box
  • One Kirbé vertical drapery
  • Two jamb sub-brackets
  • Eight #8 x 1.75 in mounting screws
  • Two 4 in (102 mm) cable ties
  • Two spare #6 x 0.25 in retaining screws
Tools
Power drill, level, tape measure, #2 Phillips screwdriver and a 1/4 in hex-head driver
Cable exit
From the wall, ceiling or jamb on the drive side, with 12 to 18 in (305 to 457 mm) of cable left exposed. The cable routes between the drapery bracket and the sub-bracket without being pinched.
Sub-bracket position
12 in (305 mm) above the top of the window opening so the open drape clears the view. Set horizontally at the specified bracket-to-bracket dimension, wall or jamb mount.
Sub-bracket to fabric
1.50 in (38 mm) from the edge of the sub-bracket to the fabric
Hanging the drape
Take the retaining screws out of the drapery brackets. Hook each bracket's lip over a sub-bracket's top and swing the drape down until the bracket bottoms rest on them.
Securing and leveling
Retaining screws go into both drapery brackets and must be fully tightened. The leveling screw raises or lowers the idler side until the drape is level.
Two installers
Drapery systems wider than 4 ft (1.2 m) require two people
Environment
32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C), 0 to 90% humidity non-condensing, indoor use only
Hardware
Lutron hardware, controls and power supplies only
Troubleshooting
  • Fabric off level or center: check the brackets are level and centered
  • Uneven movement: check nothing obstructs the fabric
  • Drape stops short of open or closed: check limits and obstructions
Wiring and limits
Not in this guide. The Basic Wiring and Setup Guide packed with the Kirbé system covers wiring and the open and close limits.
