Installation walk-through for 045538

Lutron document 045538 gives five steps, in the document's order, after the fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Fixings

  • Fasteners for the surface, rated 50 lb (23 kg), not provided
  • Horizontal board between the studs as bottom support, recess mount
  • Strain relief devices, one for each knockout used (not included)
  • 10 AWG to 14 AWG (4.0 mm² to 2.5 mm²) power wire
  • 2-pin terminal blocks for the outputs (10 provided, packaged separately)
  1. Prepare the Smart Panel

Loosen the four front cover screws, slide the cover upward and lift it away. Take out the two line voltage shield screws and lift the shield out, keeping the screws for refitting.

  2. Mount the Smart Panel

Pick a place that will remain accessible, since Lutron supplies no mounting hardware. For a surface mount, fix the enclosure to the wall through the three keyholes in its back.

For a recess mount, fit a horizontal board between the studs as a bottom support. Fix the panel to the right-hand stud and to that board through the holes provided.

Check: Fasteners suit the surface and are rated for a 50 lb (23 kg) load

  3. Connect line voltage

Knock out a tab near the input terminal blocks and fit a strain relief. Pull 10 AWG to 14 AWG (4.0 mm² to 2.5 mm²) power wire to the input blocks at the top left.

Strip each conductor, land line, neutral and ground as the figure shows, and tighten each screw. Tighten the strain relief, then refit the line voltage shield with its original screws.

    Clearance: Strip 5/16 in (8 mm); torque 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m)

Check: No insulation inside the terminal block

Warning: Risk of electric shock: lock the supply circuit breaker off before wiring the terminal block

  4. Connect the Sivoia QS Wireless window treatments

Remove knockout tabs on the left side as needed and fit a strain relief in each one used. Run the power cable from each Sivoia QS Wireless device through it.

Strip each conductor, put COM and V+ into a 2-pin block as the receptacle labels show, and tighten the screws. Plug the block into a power output receptacle and tighten the strain relief.

Lutron recommends making the final connection at the device after the panel work.

Clearance: Strip 1/4 in (6 mm); torque 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m); run length within the output wiring table

Check: Shade limits and free operation validated straight after power-up

Warning: Risk of electric shock and fire: never interconnect power output terminals or join V+ between outputs

  5. Monitor output status

Read the status LED fitted to each power output. A lit LED shows the output and its devices running normally.

A dark LED points to a short circuit. With no short on the output, the power supply module has failed and needs replacing.

Check: Every output in use shows its LED lit

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045538
  • Qualified electrician only, wiring and circuit protection to electrical codes
  • Some installations need a readily accessible disconnect device outside the panel
  • Electric shock risk: never energize the panel without the line voltage shield
  • Every line-voltage connection sits behind the shield
  • Output wiring is NEC Class 2 / PELV
  • Follow local and national codes for circuit separation and protection
  • Indoor use only, and not intended for phase-to-phase installations

Questions about document 045538

The answers come from Lutron document 045538 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 045538?

Lutron's two-page Smart Panel installation guide, dated February 2017, printing revision C in its header and six further languages.

Which revision of 045538 is current?

Rev C, dated February 2017, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 15 October 2026.

How many shades can one QSPSY-10PNL output power?

Up to 8 Power Draw Units, or one Sivoia QS Wireless shade or drapery drive, per Lutron document 045538.

  • Two roller 64 shades of 30 sq ft (2.75 sq m) or less
  • Three roller 64 shades of 20 sq ft (1.8 sq m) or less
  • Two roller 100 shades of 50 sq ft (4.6 sq m) or less

What supply does the Smart Panel need?

A 120 V~ to 240 V~, 50/60 Hz, 10 A input, wired by a qualified electrician, per Lutron document 045538.

  • Maximum feed circuit breaker: 20 A
  • Power wire: 10 AWG to 14 AWG (4.0 mm² to 2.5 mm²)
  • No phase-to-phase use, an external disconnect where required

How far can the output wiring run from the panel?

Up to 500 ft (152 m) on 12 AWG (4.0 mm²) for one drive per output, per Lutron document 045538.

  • 16 AWG (1.5 mm²): 200 ft (61 m)
  • 18 AWG (1.0 mm²): 125 ft (38 m)
  • Up to 8 PDU: 2000 ft (610 m), 1000 ft (305 m), 600 ft (183 m)
