Installation walk-through for 045415
Lutron document 045415 gives 16 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.
The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.
Tools
- Tape measure
- Level
- Wire cutter and stripper
- Power drill
- 3/16 in (5 mm) drill bit
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
Fixings
- Mounting screws, provided (quantity varies with blind size)
- Expansion anchors or toggle bolts, not included, for other surfaces
- Spacer blocks for an outside mount above the trim (not included)
- 4-pin terminal block, provided
Check the box and plan the opening
Unpack the blind without unrolling it. Confirm the top back cover, the 4-pin terminal block, the screws and the optional fascia are present.
Plan the position so the moving blind stays clear of window hardware, cranks, lock levers and drapery. Lutron limits the system to Lutron hardware, controls and power supplies.
Check: Every box item is present and the blind is still rolled.
Warning: Lutron marks a risk of falling objects: fix the blind system firmly as the mounting steps describe.
Mark the top back cover
Hold the top back cover against the mounting surface, centered on the window, and pencil the screw positions on it. Place a pair of screws near each end and aim every screw at a stud or solid trim.
On a blind wider than 48 in (1219 mm), mark two more pairs spaced roughly evenly across the cover.
Clearance: First pair 2 to 5 in (51 to 127 mm) from each end
Check: The cover will sit level, centered on and parallel to the opening.
Pre-drill the top back cover
Drill the top back cover at the pencil marks. Grooves along the cover help keep the drill point from wandering.
Clearance: 3/16 in (5 mm) bit
Check: Every marked position is drilled through.
Fix the top back cover
Fix the cover with the screws provided, or anchors or toggle bolts where there is no stud or solid trim. On an inside mount, Lutron draws the cover at equal depth on both sides of the opening.
On the trim, line the cover's top edge up with the point the window height was measured from. Above the trim, pack the cover out on spacer blocks so the blind clears the trim.
Check: The cover is centered in the opening and level, at equal depth on both sides for an inside mount.
Mount the RF receiver (optional)
Fit the RF receiver as its own instructions describe, where it cannot obstruct the blind. Lutron shows a suggested spot.
Clip the antenna with the receiver's clips so it hangs below the bottom edge of the top back cover.
Check: The antenna hangs below the cover and the receiver is clear of the blind's travel.
Hang the blind
Back off the retaining screw on each end bracket's front hook; the screws arrive tight for shipping. Hook the end brackets onto the top back cover, center the blind on the window, then tighten both retaining screws.
Check: The blind is centered on the window and both retaining screws are tight.
Prepare the cable
Take the outer jacket off the cable from the wall, then strip each conductor. Lutron draws a 4-conductor cable and notes that conductor count and coloring can differ.
Clearance: 2 in (51 mm) of jacket; 1/4 in (6 mm) of insulation per wire
Check: Each conductor shows bare copper at the right length.
Warning: Lutron marks a shock hazard: lock the supply breaker off or remove the fuse before wiring the terminal block.
Wire the terminal block
Land the conductors on the provided 4-pin block, labeled Common, 24 V, MUX and MUX. Tighten each screw onto bare wire with the small flat-blade screwdriver.
Leave a little copper showing so the screw does not clamp the insulation. Terminals 3 and 4 carry wired control only, so a wireless installation leaves them empty.
Clearance: 1/16 in (2 mm) of exposed conductor
Check: Every screw grips copper, not insulation.
Connect the drive and the receiver
Plug the blind's EDU connector into the wired terminal block. If an RF receiver went up in step 5, join its connector to the blind's RF connector.
Route and secure the cables away from the moving parts.
Check: The cables are secured where they cannot interfere with moving parts.
Check and set the upper limit
Lutron sets both limits at the factory from the window measurements and recommends checking them once the blind is up. The on-board controls sit at the drive end, between the fabric roll and the end bracket.
To change the top position, tap Upper Limit and raise the blind with the arrow. Hold Upper Limit until the green LED flashes.
Check: The fully raised position matches the window opening.
Set the lower limit at the View position
Tap Lower Limit and run the blind down with the arrow until it unrolls fully to View, vanes open. On adjacent blinds, set each bottom bar level so the vanes line up from blind to blind.
Hold Lower Limit until the green LED flashes; the drive then learns the Privacy position by itself.
Check: The blind reaches View without the bottom bar touching the sill.
Warning: If the bottom bar meets the sill before View, raise the bracket height (step 13) and set the limit again.
Adjust the Privacy position (optional)
If the learned Privacy position is wrong, tap the arrow buttons to the wanted position. Hold Lower Limit until the green LED flashes and release.
Hold it a second time until it flashes and release. The LED flashes for about 10 seconds and goes out once Privacy is stored; View is not changed.
Check: The LED has gone out after its 10-second flash.
Level and align the blind (optional)
Raise the blind fully for the easiest access, then turn each bracket's vertical adjustment screw. Counterclockwise raises the blind and clockwise lowers it, for leveling or matching the vanes of the next blind.
Clearance: Plus or minus 1/4 in (6 mm) of travel
Check: The blind is level and its vanes match the next blind.
Fit the fabric-wrapped fascia (optional)
Lay the fascia fabric side down on a clean, flat surface. Push each end cap's guides into the channels on the fascia's back until the cap seats.
Hook the fascia onto the end brackets at their top front. Press along its lower half near the ends so the lower hooks engage.
Check: Both end caps are fully seated and the fascia is held top and bottom.
Warning: An inside-mounted blind may need part of the drive-side end cap notched or trimmed to clear the wiring.
Assign the blind to wireless controls
On a blind with an RF receiver, hold Upper Limit until the green LED flashes and then stays on. Tap the drive button; the LEDs flash twice and then every 4 seconds while the blind waits.
Repeat for every blind that shares the control. Hold the Bottom button on the wireless control for 6 seconds until the blinds wiggle once.
Check: Each blind has wiggled once and left assignment mode.
Assign the blind to wired and IR controls
Hold Open and Close together for 5 seconds; assigned blinds close and unassigned blinds open. Tap Open to step through the blinds (Close steps back), then tap Lower to assign the one that moves.
The blind travels to its lower limit to confirm, and Raise undoes it. Hold Open and Close for 5 seconds again to leave programming mode.
Check: Close, Preset and Open send the blind to Privacy, View and fully raised.
