Installation walk-through for 045156
Lutron document 045156 gives 19 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.
The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Wire cutter and stripper
- Level
- Pliers
- Power drill
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- Tarp for the floor
- Stud finder
- 5/32 in hex bit (in the box)
- 3/32 in hex bit (in the box)
- Hex ratchet (in the box)
- Small screwdriver enclosed with the shade
Fixings
- 8 mounting clips (in the box)
- #10 x 3 in screws into the wall studs (supply not stated)
- 5 stainless steel and 5 white fascia screws (in the box)
- 4 fascia brackets (in the box)
- Double-sided adhesive tape for the IR receiver dome (included)
- Shims, as needed to square the frame
- Sealant, or wood trim such as quarter round for larger gaps
Identify the sides and the drive corner
Lutron names the four frame sides Drive End, Pulley End, Side A and Side B. The fascia pieces carry the same labels.
The drive wiring must come out at the drive end, on the side where the drive sits. The diagram shows the drive on Side A.
Mark the well
Mark the studs on all four sides of the well. Draw a level line where the bottom of the frame will sit.
Note the pre-wire corner at the drive end. Write down the stud positions on Side A and Side B, to carry over to the frame.
Clearance: Dimension A 7 in to 9 in (178 mm to 229 mm) and B 16 in (406 mm) maximum. Dimension C 32 in (812 mm) maximum and D 2 in to 3 in (51 mm to 76 mm).
Check: Stud positions on Side A and Side B are written down for drilling.
Fit the mounting clips
Fix two of the eight clips into a stud on each side, tab tops on the level line. Vertical installations need none.
Then follow your route: floor assembled to step 4, preassembled to step 5, assembled in place to step 7.
Check: All eight clip tabs sit on the level line.
Assemble the frame on the floor (floor assembled)
Lay the four sides on the floor, matching corners together, fabric marking facing down.
Loosen the four screws on each corner bracket at the ends of Side A and Side B without removing them. Slide the corners together from corner 1 to corner 4.
Partly tighten, push each corner closed, then tighten fully while holding it. Turn the frame over so the fabric arrows point up.
Check: No gap is left between the two frame pieces at any corner.
Drill the frame (preassembled and floor assembled)
Transfer the pre-wire corner to the frame and drill a 5/8 in (16 mm) hole through it. Then drill a hole at each stud position in both inside grooves of Side A and Side B.
An IR receiver's connector goes through the 5/8 in (16 mm) hole, dome outside.
Clearance: Pre-wire hole 5/8 in (16 mm); stud holes 3/16 in, printed as 9 mm
Lift the frame into the well
Lift the frame into the well, feeding the cable through the 5/8 in (16 mm) hole without pinching the IR receiver cable. Let it snap into the clips on all four sides.
Partly tighten #10 x 3 in screws through every drilled hole in Side A and Side B into the studs.
Floor assembled frames then go to step 11; preassembled shades to step 13.
Warning: Hold the frame up by hand until the screws hold it; Lutron warns of injury from a falling heavy object.
Prepare the corner brackets (assembled in place)
Lay the four sides out, matching corners together, fabric marking facing up.
Remove each tabbed plate (2 screws), slide it into the T-slot of the matching section and screw it back.
Loosen the other two bracket screws, slide the bracket about 3 in (76 mm) inward and retighten. Repeat for all eight bracket assemblies.
Clearance: Bracket slide about 3 in (76 mm)
Drill the sections (assembled in place)
Drill the 5/8 in (16 mm) pre-wire hole, as for the other routes. Then drill at each stud in both inside grooves of Side A and Side B.
The IR receiver's connector passes through that 5/8 in (16 mm) hole, with its dome outside.
Clearance: Holes as in step 5: 5/8 in (16 mm) pre-wire, 3/16 in (printed as 9 mm) at each stud
Fix the side sections in the well
Offer up the section with the 5/8 in (16 mm) hole, feeding the wall cable through it and resting the section on the clips. Partly tighten #10 x 3 in screws into the studs, then repeat with Side B.
Close the corners in place
Set the drive end section onto the clips.
At each corner, slide the tabbed plate toward the corner and the Side A bracket into the corner. Screw the plate into the bracket and tighten all screws.
Repeat at the second corner, then for the pulley end section.
Check: All four corners are closed and every corner screw is tight.
Install the shade in the frame (customer assembled)
Remove two screws from each of the corner 1 and corner 2 brackets. Lift the shade in and line up the shade brackets with the frame brackets.
Set the hembar wheels into the guide tracks, then refit and tighten the four screws.
Check: The hembar wheels run in both guide tracks.
Attach the tension cables
On Side A, run the cable from its cardboard spool through the two corner 2 pulleys. Pull the loop through and take it around the spring pulley.
On Side B, loosen the hook screw and unhook the spring. Run the cable through the two corner 3 pulleys and loop it around the spring pulley.
Then stretch the spring back onto its hook and tighten the screw.
Check: Each cable runs over every pulley and around its spring pulley.
Warning: Lutron warns that the system comes under tension once the Side B spring is rehooked. A spring not secured properly can injure the installer.
Wire and set the limits
Wiring and basic setup, including the limits, follow the Basic Wiring and Setup Guide.
To reach the drive's control panel, slip the small screwdriver supplied with the shade between spool and bracket. The bracket label shows what each button does.
Check: The drive is powered and its limits are set.
Align the cable on the spool
Enter open limit mode and open the shade until the hembar just touches the roller, so the cable seats itself. Close the shade about 12 in (305 mm), compare the cable with the aligned diagram, and exit open limit mode.
Clearance: Close about 12 in (305 mm) after the hembar touches the roller
Check: The cable sits on the spool as the aligned diagram shows.
Warning: Lutron says the cable must pass over all pulleys and onto the spools before the shade is moved.
Square and shim the frame
Measure both diagonals and add shims until diagonals A and B are within 1/4 in (6 mm) of each other. Tighten the mounting screws, add shims wherever the frame bows, and measure the diagonals again.
Clearance: Diagonals within 1/4 in (6 mm)
Check: The diagonals still agree after the screws are tight.
Hide the clips and mount the IR receiver
Press each clip's tongue and turn the clip behind the frame.
Connect an IR receiver to the drive harness as the Basic Wiring and Setup Guide shows. Stick its dome to a frame corner with the tape provided and tuck spare cable between frame and wall.
Check: No clip is visible below the frame.
Fit the fascia brackets
Slide one bracket's flat tab into the Side A fascia, at the end that has no hole. Slide another into the Side B fascia the same way.
Slide the other two brackets into the Drive End fascia, fully home. The Pulley End fascia takes no brackets.
Install the fascia
Seat the Drive End fascia, then Side A, Side B and the Pulley End fascia last. Drive the four fascia screws into the brackets with the 3/32 in hex bit; the self-locking screws need more torque.
Check: All four fascia pieces are fully seated and screwed.
Seal the perimeter
Run sealant around the frame to hide gaps where the mounting surface is uneven. Wood trim such as quarter round covers larger gaps.
