Installation walk-through for 045920

Lutron document 045920 gives seven steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Power drill/driver
  • Pencil
  • 3/16 in (#13) drill bit, extended length
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver with extension
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Center punch and hammer

Fixings

  • Bracket kit: bracket count varies with shade width
  • Mounting screws: two per bracket, in the bracket kit
  • Top back cover mounting screws (optional)
  • Spacers: one per mounting bracket, included with an outside mount above trim
  • Angled spacer for angled window trim (not included)
  1. Check the end clearance

Hold the top back cover against the mounting surface in roughly its final position. Lutron wants at least 3/16 in (5 mm) between each end of the cover and the nearest object, so the headrail endcaps have room.

Clearance: 3/16 in (5 mm) minimum at each end

Check: Both ends clear the nearest object by 3/16 in (5 mm) or more.

  2. Set the bracket positions from the spools

Each bracket sits over the rounded section of a lift spool in the headrail. The drawing crosses out positions off the spool.

The count follows the width: two brackets up to 45 in (1143 mm), three to 72 in (1829 mm), four to 96 in (2438 mm).

Check: The bracket count matches the width band and every bracket lines up with a spool.

  3. Pre-drill the top back cover

Lay the cover on a work surface, set the brackets in their final positions and mark each hole. Set the brackets aside and dimple every mark with the center punch and hammer.

Drill each dimple with the extended-length 3/16 in (#13) bit. Holes for mounting the cover on its own are optional, placed clear of the brackets.

Check: Every bracket hole is dimpled and drilled at 3/16 in (#13).

  4. Fix the cover and brackets to the structure

Fastening the cover itself with the supplied screws is optional. For the supplied screws, drill 3/32 in (#42) pilot holes in the surface, using the drilled cover as a template.

Put the brackets back in the cover, aligned with the holes. Drive two screws through each bracket and the cover into solid structure.

An inside mount fixes inside the window opening. Angled trim takes an angled spacer (not included) behind each bracket; protruding trim takes the included spacer.

Check: Two screws per bracket are driven into solid structure, with blocking added where needed.

Warning: Lutron makes the installer responsible for fasteners of the right type and length, driven securely into solid structure.

  5. Hang the shade

Line the shade up so both headrail endcaps sit clear of the ends of the top back cover.

Angle the top of the shade slightly toward the glass and catch the headrail's front edge in the brackets. Rotate the back of the headrail up and press the bottom firmly until each bracket clicks.

Check: The headrail is fully engaged in every bracket.

Warning: No fabric cell may be pinched in a bracket.

  6. Operate the shade

Lutron document 045920 operates the shade by hand at the bottom bar handle. Pull the bar gently down to lower and lift it gently to raise.

The guide shows no cord, wand or control.

  7. Release the shade from the brackets

Press the release tab at the bottom center of each bracket to free the back of the headrail.

Raise the shade fully and support it with one hand while pressing each tab in turn. With the back free of every bracket, lift the front off.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045920
  • Strangulation hazard: cords can strangle young children
  • Canada: remove at once if an accessible cord exceeds 22 cm (8.5 in)
  • Canada: remove at once if an accessible loop exceeds 44 cm (17 in) around
  • Risk of falling objects: drive the right fasteners securely into solid structure
  • Fasteners of the right type and length, with blocking added where needed
  • Shades wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need at least two people to handle and install
  • Lutron warns that ignoring the instructions can cause minor or moderate injury.
