Installation walk-through for 045836

Lutron document 045836 gives 21 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Power drill
  • 3/32 in (2.4 mm) drill bit
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver bit
  • 6 in (152 mm) driver extension

Fixings

  • Mounting screws, included, 2 per mounting bracket
  • Center support with 2 screws, included for blinds over 48 in (1219 mm)
  • Left and right bracket locks, included
  • Valance clips, quantity varies with valance width
  • Combined right/left bracket, included for two blinds under one valance
  • Spacer blocks, 1 per bracket and center support, when ordered
  • Hold down brackets (2) with pins, included when specified on the order
  • Fasteners suited to the mounting surface, the installer's responsibility
  1. Unpack and check the contents

Lay out the blind, the left and right brackets, the bracket locks, the screws, the valance and its clips.

Blinds over 48 in (1219 mm) wide also ship with a center support and two screws. A combined right/left bracket, hold down brackets and spacer blocks come only when the order asked for them.

Check: Box contents match section 1.1, including any combined bracket, hold down brackets or spacer blocks ordered.

  2. Gather tools, batteries or the power supply

Have the tape measure, pencil, level and drill ready. Add the 3/32 in (2.4 mm) bit and the 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver with 6 in (152 mm) extension.

A battery blind under 28 in (711 mm) wide takes twelve 1.5 V lithium AA cells. A wider blind takes 1.5 V alkaline D cells, four or eight by size or twelve with Battery Boost.

A wired blind needs the CSPS-P1-1-6-WH plug-in supply or the CSPS-P1-10-6 panel, bought separately.

Check: The right battery count or the right supply is on site before the blind goes up.

Warning: Strangulation hazard: remove the product if an accessible cord exceeds 8.65 in (22 cm) or an accessible loop exceeds 17.35 in (44 cm) around. Shock hazard: switch off power at the main service panel before connecting or servicing a wired blind.

  3. Mark the bracket positions

Hold the blind up to the window in roughly its final position.

For an inside mount, center the blind in the opening and confirm the gap at each headrail end. For an outside mount, center the blind over the opening and pencil a mark just beyond each headrail end.

Clearance: Inside mount: 1/4 in (6 mm) from each end of the headrail to the jamb. Outside mount: marks 1/8 in (3 mm) from each end of the headrail.

Check: Blind centered in the opening (inside mount) or over it (outside mount) before marking.

Warning: Bracket doors open upward toward the room, never downward; screws reach solid structure, with blocking if needed. Blinds and valances wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need at least two people.

  4. Fix the brackets, inside mount

Set each bracket against the window jamb and drive two screws into the frame or jamb. Lutron recommends the jamb.

Fix any center support with two screws on the window centerline, at the same depth as the brackets.

Check: All brackets sit at one depth with their doors opening up toward the room.

  5. Fix the brackets, outside mount

Set the brackets on or above the trim at the chosen height, on the marks from step 3. Drive two screws into each.

Fix the center support, if supplied, at the same height on the window centerline with two screws. Where trim or hardware is in the way, add spacer blocks behind each bracket and the center support.

Check: Brackets and center support are level with each other and clear the trim.

  6. Two blinds under one valance (optional)

For two blinds under one valance, the box holds a left, a right and a combined right/left bracket. The blinds then hang side by side as close together as possible.

Fix all brackets and center supports by the inside or outside mount method. Hang and power each blind, then fit the valance across both.

  7. Test fit the valance

On an outside mount with a valance with returns, offer it up to the fixed brackets. Confirm the brackets fit between the returns.

If the valance does not clear the brackets, re-measure and move the brackets before hanging the blind.

Check: The valance fits around the mounted brackets.

  8. Prepare the blind

On a plug-in blind, take the bundled power cable out of the headrail carefully. Decide which way it will run and orient it, but keep it wrapped until the power-up step.

Grasp the middle of the bottom bar and pull the blind away from the headrail. Pull far enough to free the top slat from the brackets; the blind need not be fully extended.

Check: The top slat is clear of the headrail.

Warning: Keep the power cable connected to the EDU and do not disturb the antenna wire. Reposition the antenna as drawn if it has moved.

  9. Hang the blind

Push the headrail in between the mounting brackets and into the center support where fitted. Close every bracket door, pressing firmly so the tab on the bracket passes through the slot in the door.

Check: Each door's slot has engaged on its bracket tab.

  10. Fit the bracket locks

Seat the hook of the left bracket lock in the hole under the left mounting bracket. Swing the lock up across the front of the bracket and press until it fastens over the headrail's top edge.

Push up on the headrail if needed. Fit the right bracket lock on the right mounting bracket the same way.

Check: Both locks are fastened over the headrail.

  11. Power up a battery blind

Fit the batteries exactly as marked in the holders on the front of the headrail.

The shade button flashes red and green three times when the blind has power. If the batteries are not fitted correctly, the blind may not power up.

Check: Three red and green flashes of the shade button.

Warning: Never mix old and new cells or battery types, and never fit carbon-zinc or rechargeable cells. Lithium AA cells fitted backwards can cause fire.

  12. Power up a plug-in blind

Unwrap the power cable and plug it into the individual supply. Route and secure the cable where it cannot foul the blind, then plug the supply into a suitable outlet.

Check: The shade button flashes red and green three times.

  13. Power up a blind on the power panel

Unroll the cable from the headrail and cut off its barrel connector. Make the connections as the panel's packed instruction guide directs, then route and secure the wiring clear of the blind.

Check: The shade button flashes red and green three times once the panel is live.

Warning: Switch off power at the main service panel first. Use cable rated CLS2X or better and connect only to a Lutron 12 V DC source.

  14. Decide how the blind will be controlled

The shade button with its LED sits on the EDU in the headrail near the left end. The button drives every assignment step.

With a Caséta Smart Bridge or an RA2 Select system installed, program and control the blind from the Lutron App. Without a system, assign a Pico or a 4-Group RF remote by hand.

  15. Assign a Pico

Tap the shade button so it lights green, then press and hold the Privacy (close) button on the Pico. When the shade button flashes green the assignment is complete; repeat for any other remote.

Check: Green flash of the shade button.

  16. Assign a 4-Group RF remote

Tap the shade button so it lights green, then press and hold the group button the blind should belong to. The shade button flashes green when done; repeat for further assignments.

Check: Shade button flashes green for the group assignment.

  17. Adjust the View and Privacy positions (optional)

The View (open), Favorite and Privacy (closed) slat angles come preset. To change, tap the shade button, then hold View (open) and Jog-Open together until it flashes green then stays lit.

Release, and jog the slats to the angle wanted. Hold View (open) to store the View position, or Privacy (close) to store the Privacy position; the button flashes green.

Check: Green flash confirming the new position.

Warning: A red flash while saving can mean the slats are closed too tightly: open them slightly and save again.

  18. Set a Favorite position

Jog the slats to the angle wanted, then hold the Favorite button for 3 seconds. The shade button flashes green when the position is saved.

Check: Shade button flashes green once the Favorite is saved.

  19. Fit the optional valance

Lay the valance face down. Push a clip into its channel and turn it 90°, release tab toward the bottom edge; repeat for every clip.

Slide the clips along to line up with the valance brackets already on the headrail. Push the valance up and around the brackets from below until each clip clicks.

For a battery change, squeeze the release tabs and slide the valance down until it hangs on the brackets. The full-release tabs take it off completely.

Check: Every clip is locked onto a valance bracket.

  20. Fit the optional hold down brackets

On a door or other moving surface, lower the blind to where the bottom bar will be held. Set a bracket against the surface, in line with the hole in the bottom bar's end.

Raise the blind and mark its two holes. Pre-drill if needed; fix the bracket with fasteners suited to the surface.

Repeat at the other end so the two are level and aligned. Push an anchor pin through each bracket into the bottom bar, fully home.

Check: The two brackets are level and aligned with the bottom bar holes.

  21. Troubleshoot or reset

For a factory reset, tap the shade button three times, holding the third until the LED flashes green rapidly. Right away, tap three more times: green rapidly, then red and green three times, then off.

The table covers no power-up, no remote response, a red LED and ignored new batteries.

Remote: 30 ft (9 m) range, antenna in its notches, app assignment. Red LED: obstacle, tight slats, low or dead batteries; new batteries ignored: press the button once.
