Installation walk-through for 048515

Lutron document 048515 gives four steps, in the document's order, after the tools it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Pico wireless remote control
  1. Confirm the shade has power

Lutron document 048515 starts every no-response case at the shade button: tap it and look for a green LED.

A dark battery shade: check the batteries face the right way and are fresh, or fit new ones. A dark wired shade: check the plug-in supply is in a live outlet and the shade power cable is connected.

Check: The shade button LED lights green when tapped.

  2. Assign the Pico

Tap the shade button; the LED glows green while the shade is in programming mode. Hold Close on the Pico until the shade button LED blinks and turns off, which ends programming mode.

Lutron applies re-pairing only to installations without a system.

Check: The LED blinks and goes off.

Warning: Programming mode times out after 30 seconds of inactivity.

  3. Set the upper limit

Tap the shade button, then hold Open and Raise together until the LED blinks and stays on. Bring the shade to the upper limit you want with Raise and Lower, then hold Open.

On a Pico with its own LED, hold Open and Raise together until that LED goes off, leaving programming mode.

Check: The LED blinks and turns off: the upper limit is set.

Warning: Stop while the cells are only just closed; squeezing the fabric is not wanted.

  4. Set the lower limit

Again tap the shade button and hold Open and Raise together until the LED blinks and stays on. Bring the shade to the lower limit you want with Raise and Lower, then hold Close.

Check: The LED blinks and turns off: the lower limit is set.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 048515
  • Never fit lithium D cells: typically 3.7 V, they damage the shade.
  • No carbon zinc batteries, and no mixing of brands or old and new batteries.
  • Clicking or other strange noises in movement: call Lutron Technical Support.

Facts Lutron states in 048515

The values Lutron document 048515 states, as published:

No response to the Pico
  • Tap the shade button: a green LED means power
  • No light: check battery orientation and freshness, or the plug-in supply
  • Then re-pair the Pico (non-system installations only)
  • Re-seat or replace the Pico battery, or try a known-good Pico
Slow movement or early stops
Remove any obstruction, read the LED code and check the lift cords wind evenly. Clicking or other noises: call Technical Support
Bottom bar not level
  • Headrail mounted level
  • Lift cords winding evenly
  • Cord spools fully seated
  • Drive shaft engaged during movement
Short battery life
Fit new batteries of the recommended type, each reading at least 1.5 V DC. On a second occurrence ask Technical Support for the Dead Battery Customer Questionnaire
Programming mode
Entered by tapping the shade button (LED green). Times out after 30 seconds of inactivity
Upper limit position
Cells just gently closed, the fabric not compressed
LED blink codes
  • Red-green three times over 3 seconds: normal power-up
  • Red blink every 5 seconds or solid red during movement: low batteries
  • Eight fast red blinks a second for 15 seconds: obstruction
  • Two fast red blinks a second for 1 minute: limits need setting
Battery types
  • D cell: alkaline recommended, never lithium D (typically 3.7 V)
  • AA cell: lithium recommended
  • No carbon zinc, rechargeables not recommended
Battery mixing
Mixing brands, or old and new batteries, in one shade is not recommended. New cells drive power through old ones and can cause leakage

Questions about document 048515

The answers come from Lutron document 048515 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 048515?

Lutron's note tackles six faults: no Pico response, wrong limits, red LED, short battery life, bad movement, unlevel bottom bar.

Which revision of 048515 is current?

Rev A, dated June 2014, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which honeycomb shades does 048515 cover?

Lutron Triathlon honeycomb shades.

Which batteries go in a Serena or Triathlon honeycomb shade?

Lutron document 048515 recommends alkaline D cells and lithium AA cells, each new battery reading at least 1.5 V DC.

Lutron bans lithium D cells (typically 3.7 V, which damages the shade) and carbon zinc cells. Rechargeables and mixed brands are not recommended.

What happens if batteries keep failing early?

Lutron document 048515 asks for new batteries of the recommended type the first time. On a second occurrence, or before any return for battery life, Lutron Technical Support supplies its Dead Battery Customer Questionnaire.

What is checked first when a honeycomb shade ignores the Pico?

Lutron document 048515 starts with power: tapping the shade button should light the LED green.

  • Batteries or the plug-in supply
  • Re-pair the Pico, on non-system installations only
  • Re-seat or replace the Pico battery, or try a known-good Pico

What does a red shade button LED mean?

Lutron document 048515 reads a red shade button LED as low batteries, an obstruction or missing limits, by its pattern.

  • Red blink every 5 seconds or solid red when moving: low batteries
  • Eight fast red blinks a second for 15 seconds: obstruction stop
  • Two fast red blinks a second for 1 minute: limits need setting

What should be checked when the bottom bar hangs unlevel?

Lutron document 048515 checks that the headrail is mounted level and the lift cords wind evenly.

The cord spools must sit fully in the headrail and the drive shaft stay engaged during movement. Lutron Technical Support helps with leveling beyond that.
