About Alena
Lutron's Alena is a motorized drapery track for the hospitality and multi-dwelling market. A guest pulls the panel and the drive runs it to its limit, which Lutron calls Pull-to-Start.
- Standalone Alena (085319): dry contact closure inputs from third-party keypads
- Alena QS or QS Wireless (085327): wired or radio Lutron control
- Drive: steel-reinforced belt, EDU 1.9 lbs (0.9 kg), slim or original orientation
- Motor no more than 50 dB at 3 ft (1 m); plug-and-play, no programming
- Track in white, silver, black or bronze
Power
Lutron powers Alena from a PELV / NEC Class 2 supply of 24 to 36 V DC, one drive per supply. The compatible Lutron 35 V DC supplies are the plug-in QSPS-Px-1-35V, the junction-box QSPS-J-1-35V and the QSPS-10PNL panel.
Sizes and fullness
The guide below gives each version's track lengths, panel weights and controls from submittals 085319 and 085327. Pinch pleat fullness is 2x, 2.5x or 3x (sheer only); ripplefold fullness is 80%, 100% or 120% on 4.25 in (108 mm) snap tape.
Writing it into a tender
Attach submittal 085319 for a standalone track or 085327 for QS or QS Wireless, naming the draw and pleat style. The contractor follows installation guide 045981 for Alena, 045984 for QS RippleFold and 045983 for the recessed system.
Which Alena product to specify
Three options, each with the case it suits and the limits Lutron prints for it. The source link opens the document that states them.
| Option | Pick it when | Limits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alena (standalone, contact closure) | A guestroom or multi-dwelling unit with no Lutron control system, run from third-party contact closure keypads. |
| 085319Drapery Specification Submittal |
| Alena QS (wired) | The track joins a wired Lutron QS link, with four-wire power and communication to the drive. |
| 085327Drapery Specification Submittal: QS Wireless System (All Models) |
| Alena QS Wireless | No control wiring is wanted, as in a retrofit; the RF receiver is pre-wired to the drive. |

Questions about Alena
Eight questions specifiers ask about Alena, answered from Lutron submittals 085319 and 085327.
What is the Lutron Alena drapery track?
Lutron's Alena is a low-voltage motorized drapery track for hospitality and multi-dwelling use, in pinch pleat or ripplefold (085319, 085327). Lutron offers left, right and center draw, as a standalone contact-closure track, Alena QS or Alena QS Wireless.
The drive, at one end on a steel-reinforced belt, is replaced or upgraded in the field without removing the track.
How does Alena pull-to-start work?
A guest grasps the draw edge within 5 ft (152 cm) of the top and pulls it the way it should travel (085319). The drive then runs the panel to its open or close limit.
Any keypad button stops a moving drape. Lutron's track also runs from keypads and remotes, and by hand when power is out (085327).
How wide and how heavy can an Alena drapery be?
Lutron's Alena table covers 24 in to 216 in (600 mm to 5486 mm) of straight track (085319, 085327).
- Pinch pleat: 20 lbs (9 kg) at 24 to 32 in (600 to 800 mm)
- Pinch pleat: 80 lbs (36.3 kg) from 84 in (2133 mm) upward
- Ripplefold: 45 lbs (20.4 kg) from 56 in (1400 mm) upward, straight only
What power supply does an Alena drapery track need?
Lutron submittals 085319 and 085327 specify PELV / NEC Class 2 power at 24 to 36 V DC. One drive per supply or panel output.
- Compatible 35 V DC supplies: QSPS-Px-1-35V, QSPS-J-1-35V, QSPS-10PNL
- Drive power 250 ft (75 m) on 12 AWG (4.0 mm²)
- 16 AWG (1.5 mm²): 100 ft (30 m); 18 AWG (1.0 mm²): 50 ft (17 m)
Can Alena work without a Lutron control system?
Yes: Lutron's standalone Alena accepts dry contact closure inputs from third-party keypads, switches and devices (085319).
- Two Group Standalone Keypad or QSE-IO interface: up to two drives
- Contact closure device: switches 36 V DC, minimum closure 0.25 seconds
- Wiring 18 to 22 AWG (1.0 to 0.5 mm²) up to 250 ft (75 m)
Which controls work with Alena QS Wireless?
Lutron's submittal 085327 lists these controls for Alena QS Wireless.
- Remotes and keypads: Pico, Serena 4-Group wireless control, seeTouch RF keypads
- Systems: GRAFIK Eye QS, RA2 Select, RadioRA 2, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks QS, HomeWorks QSX, myRoom Plus, myRoom XC
- Caséta Wireless with Smart Bridge Pro
Lutron pre-wires the RF receiver, so only the two power terminals are wired.
Can an Alena track be recessed flush with the ceiling?
Yes: Lutron's recessed system uses an 8 ft (2.4 m) pocket extrusion with mud-in flanges, straight track only (085327).
- For 5/8 in (16 mm) double-layer drywall; members at most 16 in (406 mm) apart
- Track length: tape measure slot distance plus 6 in (152 mm)
- Pocket cut width: ordered track width minus 8 in (203 mm)
How is the Alena drive mounted and how loud is it?
Lutron rates the Alena motor at 50 dB or less at 3 ft (1 m) (085319).
- Ceiling cam locks 4 to 8 in (100 to 200 mm) from each end
- Next 16 in (400 mm) inward, the rest 16 to 24 in (406 to 610 mm) apart
- Recess: brackets 16 in (406 mm) apart, each into a structural member
