Installation walk-through for 045983
Lutron document 045983 gives eight steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.
The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.
Tools
- Laser or straight edge
- Lutron Installation Tool (recommended)
- 3/32 in (2 mm) Allen key (provided)
- Drill, low torque setting
- Compressed air or flexible pipe cleaner brush
- Painter's tape
Fixings
- Blocking for the drapery system in a wood, metal or concrete ceiling
- Pocket mounting screws, flanges into blocking, not provided by Lutron
- Self-drilling track mounting screws (provided by Lutron)
- Spacers equal to the final drywall thickness, not provided by Lutron
- Or a drywall perimeter about 8 in (203 mm) wide with the pocket
Prepare the ceiling
Add blocking to carry the weight of the drapery system, whatever the ceiling is built from. Plan the power wire to arrive at the drive end of the drapery.
The pocket will be screwed to this blocking 1 in (25 mm) from each end and at most every 16 in (406 mm). Both endcaps need blocking behind them too.
Clearance: Screws 1 in (25 mm) from the ends, no more than 16 in (406 mm) apart
Check: Blocking sits behind the full pocket length and behind both endcaps
Warning: Inspect the pocket and endcaps before installing; Lutron takes no responsibility for damage from a wrong installation
Choose double or single layer drywall
The pocket needs a recess 1.25 in (32 mm) deep so its flanges press tight to the board. Two layers of 5/8 in (16 mm) drywall give that depth.
With a single layer, notch the joist by 5/8 in (16 mm) instead, if the structure allows it.
Clearance: 1.25 in (32 mm) recess
Check: Any joist notching complies with the local building code and structural requirements
Warning: Follow every applicable building code when cutting into a ceiling joist
Mark the location of the drapery
Set the recessed drive endcap next to the 4-conductor cable, at the point where the drapery should end. With a laser or straight edge, mark where the idler endcap will sit.
Clearance: Pocket line straight within plus or minus 1/16 in (2 mm)
Check: Drive end and cable are on the same side
Assemble the pocket
Screw the drive endcap to the blocking, then cut the 8 ft (2.4 m) pocket pieces to length. Screw them through their flanges into the blocking.
Butt the pieces tightly and line them up so the Installation Tool slides across each joint without catching. Screw the idler endcap to the blocking, tight against the pocket.
Keep this work off the drywall trade with spacers at the finished board thickness, or a drywall perimeter about 8 in (203 mm) wide.
Clearance: Cut length 8 in (203 mm) less than the ordered track width. Slot-to-slot 6 in (152 mm) less than the track width when the track is ordered but not on site.
Check: Joints are tight, the Installation Tool runs smoothly end to end, and the idler endcap is hard against the pocket
Measure the pocket width and order the track
Measure between the tape measure slots, inside edge to inside edge. Order a track 6 in (152 mm) wider than that measurement.
Lutron's intended sequence is pocket first, then the track order. A track already on site can be dry-fitted before the pocket goes up.
Clearance: Track width = slot-to-slot distance + 6 in (152 mm)
Check: Slot-to-slot measured inside edge to inside edge before the track is ordered
Mud and paint the ceiling
Run painter's tape inside the pocket to keep it clean, then mud in the flanges and paint the ceiling.
Check: Pocket interior clean of mud and paint before the track arrives
Prepare the track
Slide a recess-mount bracket into the track's upper channel and line its center slot up with a mounting hole. A screw dropped through both holds the alignment.
Turn the bracket 90 degrees, tighten both set screws with the 3/32 in (2 mm) Allen key, and remove the alignment screw. Repeat at every mounting hole along the track.
Check: A bracket is locked at each mounting hole along the full track length
Mount the track
Center the idler end in its endcap with a 1/16 in (2 mm) gap all round. The drive side keeps extra room for belt tensioning.
Drive Lutron's self-drilling track screws with the tip on the pocket's center groove, on a low torque setting. A stripped screw gets a new hole beside it in the track.
Clear metal shavings out with compressed air or a pipe cleaner brush. Or drill a 1/8 in (3 mm) pilot hole first.
Clearance: 1/16 in (2 mm) gap around the idler; 3/8 in (10 mm) clearance on the drive side
Check: No metal shavings left inside the track
Count the screws securing the recessed pocket from 045983
Lutron document 045983 spaces the screws securing the recessed pocket: one at each end, at least 1 in (25 mm) in from the end. The rest sit at most 16 in (406 mm) apart.
Enter the track width to count the screws securing the recessed pocket.

Requirements Lutron states in 045983
What the guide requires for a Sivoia QS shade before and during installation:
- Recess depth
- 1.25 in (32 mm), so the pocket flanges press tight to the drywall
- Two layers of 5/8 in (16 mm) drywall give this
- Or a single layer with the joist notched by 5/8 in (16 mm)
- Pocket fixing
- Screwed to blocking 1 in (25 mm) from each end
- Screws no further apart than 16 in (406 mm) along the track
- Both drive and idler endcaps also screw to blocking
- Pocket screws not provided by Lutron
