Installation walk-through for 045830

Lutron document 045830 gives 14 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Drill, 3/32 in (2.4 mm) bit
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Pencil

Fixings

  • Mounting screws, 2 per bracket (provided), or other suitable fasteners
  • Spacers (optional, included), 1 per bracket
  • Angled spacer (not included) for angled trim
  1. Unpack the box and verify contents

Check the box for the Serena or Triathlon honeycomb shade and the mounting brackets, whose number depends on shade size. Two mounting screws come per bracket, with the optional spacers, one per bracket.

Batteries, the plug-in supply and the power panel are sold separately.

Check: The bracket and screw count matches the shade.

  2. Verify correct shade size

For an inside mount, offer the shade up to the window and confirm it fits between the jambs. For an outside mount, center the shade on the window and mark the wall or trim at each end.

Check: The shade fits between the jambs, or both end marks are made.

  3. Attach the brackets to the mounting surface

Mark the holes per the mounting options and the Bracket Placement Guide. Type 1 brackets sit over each spool; Type 2 to 4 outer brackets sit 2 in (51 mm) from the ends.

Level the marks on an outside mount, then pre-drill and fix the brackets with the provided screws.

Fit an included spacer where the trim protrudes or the shade has an external 8 AA battery pack. On angled trim, use an angled spacer, not included, drilled through.

Clearance: Type 2 to 4 outer brackets 2 in (51 mm) from each end. Minimums of 1.25 in (32 mm) and 2.75 in (70 mm) for Type 1 shades with an external battery box only.

Check: The marks are level on an outside mount.

Warning: The installer chooses fastener type and length and drives them into solid structure, adding blocking if needed.

  4. Hang the shade in the brackets

Take any yellow bracket locating labels off the headrail. With both hands on the shade, tilt its top slightly toward the glass.

Catch the headrail's front edge in the brackets, behind the battery release tabs. Rotate the back of the headrail up and press its underside firmly until it clicks.

Check: The headrail is fully engaged in all brackets.

Warning: The labels must come off before the shade goes in, and no fabric cells may be caught in the brackets.

  5. Expose the top of the headrail

Press all the bracket release tabs above the headrail. The shade tilts forward, giving access to the battery holders or the power cable.

  6. Connect a power source

Lutron builds each shade for battery or wired power as ordered, and the two cannot be swapped. Battery shades take batteries only as the holders show, with D cells limited to matching 1.5 V alkaline.

A plug-in shade's cable is uncoiled from the headrail into its individual supply and a compatible outlet.

A shade on the 10-output panel follows the panel's own instructions, P/N 045560. The cable is CLS2X or better, at 12 V DC only.

Check: On a battery shade, the Shade Button blinks red and green three times once powered.

Warning: Use only lithium batteries recognized by UL or a local safety agency, never fitted backwards. Switch off at the main service panel before connecting a wired shade.

  7. Return to operating position

Tilt the shade back into the brackets and press gently until each bracket clicks.

Check: A click is heard at every bracket.

  8. Determine control intent

Lutron's single LED Shade Button, on the drive unit near the headrail center, serves assignment and programming. With a Caséta Smart Bridge or an RA2 Select system, use the Lutron App.

Triathlon shades on RadioRA 2 use RadioRA 2 Essentials or Inclusive software; on HomeWorks QS, its design and programming software. Any other shade goes on to the Pico or 4-Group steps.

  9. Assign a Pico wireless control

Tap the Shade Button so it lights green, then press and hold Close on the Pico. Repeat for each further shade or assignment.

Check: The Shade Button flashes green when assignment is complete.

  10. Assign a Lutron 4-Group remote control

Tap the Shade Button so it lights green, then press and hold the wanted group button on the 4-Group remote.

Check: The Shade Button's green flash confirms the 4-Group assignment.

  11. Adjust upper and lower limits (optional)

Tap the Shade Button, then hold Open and Raise together until it flashes green and stays lit, and release. Move the shade with Raise and Lower.

Hold Open at the chosen open position for the upper limit, or Close at the closed position for the lower.

Check: The Shade Button flashes green when the adjustment is saved.

Warning: Cells should close and stack gently at the upper limit; tight compression wears the drive gear and shortens battery life.

  12. Set a favorite shade position (optional)

Move the shade to the wanted position with Raise and Lower, then hold Favorite for 6 seconds.

Check: The Shade Button flashes green when the favorite is saved.

  13. Remove the shade from the brackets

Raise the shade fully and hold it with one hand. Press the release tab at the bottom center of each bracket with a finger, freeing the back of the headrail.

Once every bracket has let go, lift the shade off.

  14. Restore factory default settings

Tap the Shade Button three times quickly and keep holding after the third tap until the LED flashes green rapidly.

Straight away, tap three more times quickly. The LED flashes green rapidly, then red and green three times, and goes out.

Check: The LED turns off after the red and green flashes.
