Installation walk-through for 048561

Lutron document 048561 gives six steps, in the document's order.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

  1. Get a matched set of new batteries

Lutron document 048561 swaps all the batteries in a shade together for brand-new, unopened ones from one package.

Each should expire no sooner than 7 years after installation, because stored batteries slowly drain. Buy a well-known brand.

Warning: Never mix manufacturers or types, such as lithium with alkaline.

  2. Fit every battery the right way round

Check the orientation of each battery as it goes in. Lutron notes that a shade may still power up and run with one or two batteries reversed.

Warning: Reversed batteries cut battery life significantly.

  3. Use the right chemistry

D-cell shades take alkaline batteries; Lutron names Duracell Coppertop. AA-cell shades run on alkaline but last longer on lithium; Lutron names Energizer Lithium AA.

Warning: No carbon-zinc, lithium or rechargeable D cells.

  4. Reject damaged or expired cells

Look over each battery before fitting it. Set aside any battery that is expired, dented, scratched or has a damaged label, corroded terminals or leakage.

  5. Check the shade and its travel

Watch the blink codes and movement speed to know when batteries need changing. Keep the shade clear of snags along its travel.

On a honeycomb shade, do not set the open limit so tight that the hembar squeezes the fabric.

Check: After opening, the honeycomb fabric does not relax and the drive LED does not blink red.

  6. Wake a hibernated shade

A shade at battery end of life stops answering commands and shows no LED. Remove the old batteries and wait 5 minutes before fitting new ones.

On shades made in 2014 or later, fit the new batteries at once, then press and release the shade button.

Check: The shade leaves hibernation and runs normally.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 048561
  • Keep shades on their own RF link and channel where possible.
  • Sensors sharing a channel keep a shade awake and shorten battery life.
  • Configure third-party integration drivers correctly.
  • Third-party equipment: excess Lutron RF traffic drastically cuts battery life.
  • Channel changes for battery shades go through Lutron Technical Support.

Facts Lutron states in 048561

The values Lutron document 048561 states, as published:

Battery replacement rule
  • All batteries at once, new and unopened from one package
  • At least 7 years to expiry
  • No mixed makers or chemistries
D-cell shades
Alkaline recommended. No carbon-zinc, lithium or rechargeable D cells
AA-cell shades
  • Lithium recommended
  • Alkaline runs the shade for less time
  • The SCT and myProjects estimates assume lithium

One or two reversed batteries may still run the shade but cut battery life significantly
RF link capacity
100 devices and 100 zones at most, repeaters and processors included
Usage assumption
2 up and down cycles a day (1 for Triathlon Select roller shades)
Low battery code
Red blink every 5 seconds: replace within 3 months
Very low battery code
Solid red during movement: replace within 2 weeks
Waking a hibernated shade
Wait 5 minutes before fitting new batteries. Shades made in 2014 or later: fit them and press the shade button once
Sensors, Caséta and RA2 Select
Up to 4 sensors in the system: 25% or smaller battery life reduction. 4 sensors kept out of the system: 10% or less
Wired power
Triathlon shades cannot be converted from battery to plug-in or panel power on site
Default RF channel
433.6 MHz on the first RF link, also the out-of-the-box frequency of all wireless sensors

Questions about document 048561

The answers come from Lutron document 048561 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 048561?

Lutron's five-page note covers Serena, Triathlon, Triathlon Select and Palladiom Wire-Free shades, with Natural Light Optimization in a closing table.

Which revision of 048561 is current?

Rev F, dated October 2024, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 048561 cover?

Lutron Triathlon roller shades.

How do sensors affect shade battery life?

Lutron document 048561 explains that a battery shade wakes for every Lutron radio signal on its channel.

Sensors transmit far more often than keypads. In larger systems Lutron puts wireless daylight, window and temperature sensors on a separate RF link from the shades.

Which batteries should go in a Lutron D-cell shade?

Lutron document 048561 recommends alkaline D cells, all new from one package with at least 7 years to expiry. Lutron names Duracell Coppertop and rules out carbon-zinc, lithium and rechargeable D cells.

What if a shade stops responding and shows no LED?

Lutron document 048561 treats a dark, unresponsive shade as hibernating at battery end of life.

Lutron removes the old batteries and waits 5 minutes before fitting new ones. Shades made in 2014 or later take new batteries at once, then one press of the shade button.

What does a red blink every 5 seconds mean?

Lutron document 048561 reads a red blink every 5 seconds as low batteries, solid red during movement as very low.

  • Low batteries: replace within 3 months
  • Very low batteries: replace within 2 weeks

How many movements a day does Lutron's battery estimate assume?

Lutron document 048561 assumes 2 full up and down cycles a day for Serena and Triathlon roller and honeycomb shades.

  • Palladiom Wire-Free: 2 up and down cycles a day
  • Triathlon Select roller shades: 1 cycle a day
  • Serena and Triathlon wood blinds: 2 open and close tilts a day
