Installation walk-through for 0450007

Lutron document 0450007 gives nine steps, in the document's order, after the fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Fixings

  • Wall fasteners to suit the surface, rated 50 lb (23 kg), not provided
  • A strain relief device for each knockout used, not included
  1. Prepare the panel: remove the front cover

Take out the four front cover screws and lift the cover off the enclosure.

  2. Remove the line voltage shield

Take out the screw that holds the line voltage shield and lift the shield clear of the enclosure. Keep the screw; the shield goes back on it in step 6.

  3. Mount the panel

Choose a position that stays accessible after the build. Fix the panel to the wall through the holes in the back of the enclosure.

Use fasteners suited to the surface and rated for 50 lb (23 kg). Lutron supplies no mounting hardware.

Check: Panel fixed and accessible; fasteners rated for 50 lb (23 kg).

    Warning: Indoor use only, at 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C).

  4. Bring in the line voltage cable

Remove one knockout tab near the input terminal blocks and fit a strain relief device in the hole. Run 10 to 14 AWG (4.0 to 2.5 mm²) supply cable through it to the input terminal blocks.

Clearance: Supply cable 10 to 14 AWG (4.0 to 2.5 mm²)

Warning: Before any wiring at the terminal block, lock the supply breaker OFF; Lutron warns of death or serious injury.

  5. Land Line, Neutral and Ground

Strip 5/16 in (8 mm) from each conductor and insert Line, Neutral and Ground into the terminal block as the drawing shows.

Tighten each terminal screw to 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m) with no insulation inside the block, then tighten the strain relief on the cable.

    Clearance: Strip 5/16 in (8 mm); torque 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m)

Check: No insulation inside the terminal block; strain relief tight.

  6. Refit the line voltage shield

Put the shield back over the line voltage wiring and fasten it with its original screw.

Check: Shield in place with all line voltage wiring and connections behind it.

Warning: Never energize or operate the panel without the line voltage shield in place; Lutron warns of death or serious injury.

  7. Bring in the shade cables

Remove knockout tabs from the enclosure bottom as needed and fit a strain relief device in each hole used. Run one shade power cable through each.

    Clearance: Panel to shade: 200 ft (61 m) on 16 AWG (1.5 mm²), 125 ft (38 m) on 18 AWG (1.0 mm²). On 20 AWG (0.5 mm²), 75 ft (23 m).

  8. Connect each shade

Strip 1/4 in (6 mm) from each conductor. Put the 12 V DC wire into a RED terminal block and the COM wire into a BLACK terminal block.

Tighten each screw to 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m) with no insulation inside, then tighten the strain relief.

    Clearance: Strip 1/4 in (6 mm); torque 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m)

Check: 12 V DC on RED, COM on BLACK; no insulation in the blocks.

Warning: Lutron recommends making the final shade-to-panel connection at the shade, after the panel installation is complete.

  9. Power up and check the shades

After power-up, check the limits and free travel of every shade straight away, so the shades run safely during commissioning.

Check: Every shade reaches its limits and runs freely.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 0450007
  • Shock risk: lock the supply breaker OFF before wiring the terminal block
  • Shock risk: never energize or operate the panel without the line voltage shield
  • All line voltage wiring sits enclosed behind the shield
  • A qualified electrician installs the panel to national and local codes
  • Some installations need a readily accessible external disconnect device
  • Indoor use only.
