Installation walk-through for 048562

Lutron document 048562 gives five steps, in the document's order, after the tools it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • ZTS Pulse-Load multi-battery tester, MBT-1 or Mini-MBT
  1. Place the positive end

Lutron document 048562 starts with the positive end of the battery, the side with the raised bump. Hold that end on the matching terminal at the front of the tester, as figure 3.1 shows for both models.

  2. Touch the negative lead

Keep the positive end on the terminal. Touch the tester's black negative lead to the flat negative end of the battery.

  3. Read the bar graph

Read the LED bar graph: 6 LEDs on the MBT-1 or 5 on the Mini-MBT, each step 20% of capacity. Screen every new battery this way before it goes into the shade.

Check: Every new battery out of the package reads 100%.

Warning: Set aside any battery reading lower; one weak battery limits the whole series stack.

  4. Test a stack that has stopped

Test each battery the same way when the shade moves at half speed, blinks red slowly or shows solid red. A battery reading lower than the others probably limited the life of the stack.

Check: 80% soon after installation and 20% after low battery feedback are normal readings.

Warning: Readings of 20% to 40% early in life, erratic readings or rising readings point to a defective or low-quality battery.

  5. Replace the whole set

Fit a complete set of brand-new batteries from one manufacturer, preferably from one package. Matched new cells start with similar capacity, which is the point of the screening.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 048562
  • A shade hibernates by design when one battery runs down, to stop it leaking.

Facts Lutron states in 048562

The values Lutron document 048562 states, as published:

Recommended testers
ZTS Pulse-Load multi-battery testers MBT-1 and Mini-MBT. Both test alkaline D cells, only the MBT-1 tests lithium AA cells
What the tester reads
Terminal voltage under a known load, shown as state of charge in 20% steps. Bar graph of 6 LEDs on the MBT-1, 5 on the Mini-MBT
Acceptance for new batteries
Every battery going into a shade must read 100% out of the package
Why one battery matters
Shade batteries run in series, so one weak battery limits the whole stack. The shade hibernates on purpose to stop the weak battery over-discharging and leaking
Test method
Positive end (raised bump) held on the front terminal, black negative lead touched to the flat end
When to diagnose
Shade moving at half speed, slow red blink or solid red LED. Test each battery and look for the one reading lower than the rest
Replacement rule
All brand-new batteries from the same manufacturer, preferably from the same package
Normal readings
80% shortly after installation is normal. 20% after low battery feedback is normal, a reserve for hibernation, feedback, listening for radio commands and avoiding leakage
Signs of a defective battery
Readings of 20% to 40% early in life, readings that change erratically, or readings that rise over time
Example stacks
Figure 4.1 shows six-battery stacks on the MBT-1 6-LED graph in nine cases. Well matched, poorly matched and latent defect stacks, each new, partly discharged and dead
Latent defects
Lower capacity can develop after a few months, even in a new, high-quality, well-matched set from a reputable maker

Questions about document 048562

The answers come from Lutron document 048562 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 048562?

Lutron's note has two uses: screening new batteries before fitting, and finding the weak battery that ended a stack.

Which revision of 048562 is current?

Rev A, dated July 2015, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 048562 cover?

Lutron Sivoia QS roller shades.

Which battery tester does Lutron recommend?

Lutron document 048562 recommends the ZTS Pulse-Load multi-battery testers MBT-1 and Mini-MBT.

Both read voltage under load as a state of charge and take alkaline D cells. Only the MBT-1 takes lithium AA cells.

Why does one bad battery stop a shade?

Lutron document 048562 explains that the batteries run in series, so one weak or damaged battery limits the stack. The shade hibernates by design to keep that battery from over-discharging and leaking.

How is a dead battery stack diagnosed?

Lutron document 048562 tests each battery once the shade moves at half speed, blinks red slowly or shows solid red.

A battery reading lower than the others probably limited the stack. Lutron then fits a whole new set from one manufacturer, ideally from one package.

Is a reading of 80% a sign of a bad battery?

Lutron document 048562 calls 80% shortly after installation normal, because alkaline cells drop sharply in voltage when first used. Lutron flags 20% to 40% early in life, erratic readings or rising readings as signs of a defective battery.

Why does a dead shade still show 20% on its batteries?

Lutron document 048562 treats 20% after low battery feedback as normal. The shade keeps that reserve to hibernate, give feedback, listen for radio commands and avoid leakage until a battery change.
