Installation walk-through for 045913

Lutron document 045913 gives 17 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Power drill / driver
  • #2 Phillips driver bit
  • 1/8 in (#31) drill bit
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Magnetic #1 Phillips screwdriver
  • Level or laser level
  • 1.5 V D-cell alkaline batteries, sold separately

Fixings

  • Mounting screws supplied with the brackets, quantity and type by kit
  • Or other fasteners suited to the surface
  • One shim per bracket (supplied)
  • Bracket foot covers for wall and ceiling brackets (supplied)
  • Idler jamb bracket socket plate screw (supplied on the bracket)
  • 2 retention clip screws on the back of the slide ring (supplied)
  1. Check the kit and read the notes

Match the brackets to the order; each has a shim, and wall and ceiling types a foot cover. Keep clearance from trim, ceilings, corners, hardware, cranks, lock levers, other shades and drapery.

Shades over 48 in (1219 mm) take two people, and every bracket goes into blocking or structure.

Check: Correct brackets for the mount and operator side; blocking or other suitable structural material behind each bracket

Warning: Not suitable for a pocket or recess; each bracket must carry 400 lbs (181.4 kg)

  2. Mark an outside mount

Measure across the top of the window and mark the half-way point. Read the bracket-to-bracket width from the shade box label.

Mark half of it to the left of center and half to the right, then measure mark to mark.

Clearance: Mark-to-mark distance equal to the bracket-to-bracket width within ± 1/8 in (3 mm)

Check: Marks centered on the window and the right distance apart

  3. Mark an inside-mount shade on the ceiling

Read the bracket-to-bracket width from the box label and measure jamb to jamb at the top of the opening. Then measure in from the front edge of the opening towards the glass and mark the mounting depth you want.

Clearance: Jamb to jamb equal to the bracket-to-bracket width within ± 1/8 in (3 mm); depth 5/8 in (16 mm) or less for free battery access

Check: Opening width matches the shade; depth leaves the battery door reachable

Warning: Brackets set deeper than 5/8 in (16 mm) mean the shade comes out of the brackets for every battery change

  4. Mark an inside-mount shade on the jambs

Check the jamb-to-jamb width against the box label as in step 3. On each jamb mark the bracket height down from the opening top and the depth in from the front edge.

Work out the rollup radius as half the rollup diameter on the quote. Keep the bracket height at least that radius minus 1/2 in (13 mm) below the top of the jamb.

Clearance: Height at least RR minus 1/2 in (13 mm). Bracket rear to window at least RR minus 1-1/8 in (29 mm), Palladiom bar, or RR minus 1-5/8 in (41 mm), other bars.

Check: Fabric roll and bottom bar clear the window and the top of the jamb

  5. Mark a ganged run

Mark the window center and add the bracket-to-bracket widths from every box label into the total system width. Mark half of that to the left of center on a level line.

From that mark, step off shade 1's width to the right, then shade 2's, and measure end to end. Every inside-mount rule in step 4 also applies to a ganged inside mount.

Clearance: End-to-end distance equal to the total system width; each shade's width within ± 1/8 in (3 mm), measured to the centerline of the center brackets

Check: Center bracket of each shade is in the next shade's box. Wall center brackets are reversible, ceiling ones are not.

  6. Mount the idler bracket

Line the idler bracket up with its marks and mark the holes. Drill 1/8 in (#31) pilots where needed and fix it with the supplied screws or surface fasteners.

Idler end bracket: outside edge on the mark, 2 screws. Idler center bracket: foot centered on the mark, 4 screws.

Idler jamb bracket: socket plate screw out, plates parted, 2 screws, socket plate refitted. Holes are elongated: level and align the bracket, shim if needed, confirm the width, then tighten.

Check: Bracket level, aligned and at the marked width before final tightening

Warning: Risk of falling objects: follow every mounting instruction

  7. Mount the operator bracket

Fix the operator bracket the same way on the operator-side marks. Operator end bracket on a wall, door or ceiling: outside edge on the mark, 4 screws.

An operator center bracket sits centered on the mark and takes 4. An operator jamb bracket is set on its marks and fixed with 2 screws.

Check: Both brackets level with each other and at the correct width

  8. Fit the bracket foot covers

Make any last adjustment to bracket position first, because the covers hide the fastener heads. Set a cover on the mounting surface and slide it over the bracket foot; repeat for each bracket.

Check: Every bracket final, level and unobstructed before the covers go on

  9. Convert the slide ring for a left operator

Skip to step 10 for a right operator or a ceiling-mounted bracket.

Wall and jamb brackets leave the factory set for a right operator. For a left-operator shade on those brackets, remove the two retention clip screws from the back of the slide ring.

Move the clip to the opposite side, fit one screw loosely and keep the second to hand.

Check: Retention clip on the side that will sit on top

Warning: Risk of falling objects: the slide ring must be secured with the retention clip as described

  10. Snap the slide ring onto the shade

Where step 9 was skipped, first take one retention clip screw out of the slide ring and loosen the other. After step 9 go straight on.

Orient the shade's operator end as the pictures show for the bracket type and operator side. The clip sits on top, opposite the ribbon cable.

Line the 4 ribs on the slide ring up with the shade's grooves and snap it on. Swing the clip back, refit the second screw and tighten both firmly.

Check: Both retention clip screws tight; clip on top, ribbon cable opposite

  11. Hang the shade

Push the idler into the idler bracket socket until it clicks. Pull the shade back gently to feel the resistance that confirms the idler is engaged.

Line the slide ring's rear channels up with the operator bracket tracks and slide the shade in until it clicks. Take off any packaging still on the fabric roll.

Check: Audible click at both ends; resistance when the shade is pulled

Warning: Risk of falling objects: follow every hanging instruction

  12. Open the battery door

Take hold of the fabric roll at the drive end and draw it out from the bracket. Push the battery door in and then up to release it.

Let it hang below the opening on its ribbon cable.

Check: Door hanging on the ribbon cable without twisting

Warning: Never pull the battery door away from the shade; the ribbon cable ties it to the shade

  13. Load the battery sleeve

Draw the battery sleeve right out and fill it with new 1.5 V alkaline D-cells, as marked on the sleeve. Slide the loaded sleeve back in as far as it will go.

Where something blocks full removal but sits at least 3 in (76 mm) from the battery door, cut the sleeve at the marked points. The cells then go in one by one.

Clearance: At least 3 in (76 mm) between the battery door and any obstruction to cut the sleeve and load the cells one by one

Check: Fresh cells of one brand and type, orientation as marked

Warning: With less than 3 in (76 mm) free, the shade must come off the brackets for every battery change. Extend the slide ring, press the release behind the shade and pull the idler end out.

  14. Power the shade

Swing the battery door up into the opening, push it in and then down to lock it. The shade LED flashes a sequence of several hues once the batteries make contact.

    Check: Multi-hue LED flash seen

  15. Assign a Pico remote

Tap the shade button so the LED shows steady green, then hold Close on the Pico for 10 seconds. The shade LED and the Pico LED flash rapidly and go out to confirm the assignment.

For control within a Lutron system, use the setup guide supplied with that system instead.

Check: Both LEDs flash and go out

  16. Set the open limit

Tap the shade button for a steady green LED. Then hold Open and Raise on the Pico for 10 seconds until the LED flashes and returns to steady green.

Move the shade with Raise and Lower to the open position you want. Hold Open for 10 seconds until both LEDs flash and go out.

Check: Both LEDs flash and go out after the 10-second hold

  17. Set the close limit and seat the shade

Repeat the entry sequence and move the shade to the closed position you want. Hold Close for 10 seconds until both LEDs flash and go out.

Finish by sliding the shade fully back into the operator bracket as in step 11.

Check: Shade seated in the bracket with a click

How deep can inside-mount brackets sit and still allow a battery change?

5/8 in (16 mm) or less, per Lutron document 045913, so the battery compartment stays reachable.

Deeper mounting is allowed, but the shade then comes out of the brackets for every battery change. The same applies wherever less than 3 in (76 mm) is free for the battery sleeve.

How far below the top of the jamb do jamb brackets go?

At least the rollup radius minus 1/2 in (13 mm), per Lutron document 045913. The rollup radius is half the rollup diameter shown on the shade quote.

The bracket rear must also sit at least the rollup radius minus 1-1/8 in (29 mm) from the window, Palladiom bottom bar.

How are ganged shades set out, and where is the center bracket?

Lutron document 045913 adds the bracket-to-bracket widths from each box label into a total system width. A center bracket ordered on the right ships as the left bracket of the next shade.

Half the total is marked left of center, each width stepped off to the right, the end marks checked. Widths run to the center bracket centerlines.
