Installation walk-through for 0450010

Lutron document 0450010 gives 15 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Duct tape (white recommended)
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) wrench, ratchet recommended
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver

Fixings

  • Drive-end shade bracket, left or right, supplied
  • Kit bracket not used on a Gen 1 shade
  • Mandrel clip with retaining screw (supplied)
  • Replacement EDU label (supplied)
  • Bracket post retaining screw, reused where fitted
  • Fabric-wrapped fascia endcap screw, reused where fitted
  1. Unpack the kit and check the label

Read the whole guide first, since some steps apply only to certain shade generations. Unpack the EDU, the drive-end bracket, the mandrel clip with its screw and the replacement label.

Compare the Original Order, Line # and BtoB entries on that label with the shade.

Check: Label entries match the shade; if not, leave the EDU boxed and contact Lutron

Warning: Keep the replacement label; it goes on the shade at the end

  2. Raise the shade and take out the batteries

Run the shade fully up. If it ignores the control, tap the shade button once and try again, or roll the fabric up by hand.

Open the battery tray and remove every battery. With a fascia, pull it out and down; without one, rotate the top section forward.

Check: Fabric fully rolled; tray empty

  3. Release the locks and lift the shade off

Slide the bracket lock at each end well back from the rail end. With a person holding each end, press the release tab on top of each shade bracket.

A partly open battery tray makes the tabs easier to reach. Lay the shade on a clean, flat surface that will not slip, such as carpet or a covered table.

Clearance: Bracket locks at least 1.5 in (38 mm) from the rail ends; work area at least twice the shade width

Check: Shade resting flat with the fabric protected

Warning: The shade can fall the moment the release tabs are pressed

  4. Take off the fascia

At the drive end, the end with the shade button, remove the fascia endcap. Fabric-wrapped fascia: raise it and take out the endcap screw first; architectural fascia: pull the endcap off.

Then slide the fascia off the shade.

Check: Endcap screw kept for refitting

  5. Disconnect and free the drive end

Open the battery tray and find the red and black battery-to-EDU wires at the drive end. Cut any zip ties and unplug the battery box harness from the EDU harness.

If the white antenna wire is taped inside the front of the tray, untape it. If the bracket post has a retaining screw, take it out with the 1/4 in (6 mm) wrench.

Check: Note where the antenna sat

  6. Identify the generation

Look at the bracket post. A split post means a Gen 1 shade.

A solid post means Gen 2 or Gen 3, told apart by the bracket heel and the rail's lower shelf. For Gen 2 or Gen 3, confirm the kit bracket is the same generation.

Check: Kit bracket matches the shade generation

Warning: Do not install a Gen 2 or Gen 3 bracket of the wrong generation; contact Lutron

  7. Detach the bracket

Have an assistant hold the idler end steady. Set the battery tray half open so the bracket post centers in its slot.

On a Gen 1 shade, squeeze the end of the post and push it through the slot. On a later shade, work the flat blade screwdriver between bracket and tray, then twist and pry them apart.

Check: Idler end held intact throughout

Warning: The bracket post of a later-generation shade may be damaged here; the new kit bracket is used on reassembly

  8. Withdraw the old EDU

Note how the EDU wires run on the old bracket and into the tray; the new drive is wired alike. Pull the bracket away from the shade and draw the EDU fully out of the tube.

On a Gen 1 shade, separate the bracket from the EDU and go to step 10.

    Check: Wire routing noted

  9. Recover the antenna clip, if fitted

On a later-generation bracket with an antenna clip, lift the white antenna wire out of the clip channel. Feed it back down through its anchor hole until it is free.

Pry out the retaining tab behind the clip with the flat blade screwdriver. Pull the clip out and keep it for the new bracket, then go to step 11.

Check: Clip kept nearby for the new bracket

  10. Gen 1: old bracket onto the new EDU

Tilt the Gen 1 bracket slightly, insert the EDU mandrel into it, then square it up and seat it fully.

Route the antenna and EDU wires through the wire clearance opening with the shade button pointing down. Tape them in place and go to step 12.

Check: Wires inside the clearance opening and not pinched

  11. Gen 2 or 3: fit the kit bracket

With the shade button pointing down, push the mandrel clip legs into the holes on top of the EDU mandrel. Tilt the new bracket a little to engage the mandrel and fit the retaining screw.

Route and tape the wires through the clearance opening.

If an antenna clip came off in step 9, thread the antenna through its anchor hole. Click the clip into the bracket receiver and press the rest of the wire into its channel.

Check: Wires inside the clearance opening and not pinched; clip locked with a click

  12. Install the new EDU

With the assistant holding the idler end, line the EDU puck grooves up with the tube splines. Push about three quarters of the EDU in, keeping EDU and bracket together.

Pass the antenna and power wires through the pivot block's round hole, aligned on the hinge post. Line up the bearing sleeve grooves and push the EDU fully home.

Press the bracket post through the pivot block slot until it clicks. Plug the EDU wires into the battery box harness.

Check: Bracket post locked with a click

Warning: Keep the idler gear and spring-assist in position while the drive end is open

  13. Finish the drive end and label it

Tape the antenna back in the battery tray if that is where it came from. Refit any bracket post retaining screw removed earlier.

Stick the replacement EDU label in an empty spot inside the tray near the battery insertion end. Leave the original label in place.

Check: Both labels on the shade

  14. Refit the fascia

Engage the hook inside the fascia top with the open end of the fascia channel on the shade front. Slide it across the full width.

Center the fascia so it overhangs both shade ends equally. Refit the endcap and, on a fabric-wrapped fascia, its screw.

Check: Equal overhang at each end

Warning: Take care not to damage the fabric

  15. Rehang, lock and power the shade

Sit the two bracket heels on the rail's lower shelf and rotate the shade up into the rail. Open the tray and slide each bracket lock fully to its rail end, covering the release tab with a click.

Refit the batteries and close the tray. Use the Roller Shade Setup Guide 045507 for remote assignment, system set-up, limits and a favorite position.

Check: A distinct click at both ends of the shade; both locks over their release tabs

Warning: Lock the brackets to the rail and confirm the locks are engaged, or the shade can fall
