Revision and date
Revision B, March 2020
Full-recess inside mount
Valance without returns
Partial-recess inside mount, outside mount
Valance with returns
Default return
3 in (76.2 mm), from the back of the valance
Figure dimension
3.00 in (76 mm), marked on the standard return in the figure
What it covers
Headrail and bracket sides, typical outside mount without spacers

Custom Returns: Partial-Recess Inside Mount

PDF page 1 of 048752, opens in a new tab
Return range
1/2 in (12.7 mm) to 1 in (25.4 mm), from the back of the valance
Rule
Standard return depth minus measured window depth
Example
3 in minus 2 1/4 in = 3/4 in

Custom Returns: Outside Mount

PDF page 1 of 048752, opens in a new tab
Return range
3 1/8 in (79.4 mm) to 4 in (101.6 mm), from the back of the valance
Where used
Blind on spacers, or on a surface such as trim that stands out from the wall
Rule
Standard return depth plus protrusion
Example
3 in plus 3/4 in (19 mm) trim = 3 3/4 in (95.25 mm)
Case A
0 to 2 in (0 to 50.8 mm): outside mount only
Case B
2 in to 2 1/2 in (50.8 mm to 63.5 mm): partial-recess inside mount, custom returns
Case C
2 1/2 in to 3 5/8 in (63.5 mm to 92 mm): partial recess possible, but returns would be under 1/2 in (12.7 mm); no returns, valance cut edges visible
Case D
Over 3 5/8 in (92 mm): blind and valance may be fully recessed; no returns
Hardware allowance
Reduce the depth for cranks, handles or other interfering hardware
Outside mount above trim
Blind width equal to trim width; clearance for valance attachment and battery access where applicable

Installation walk-through for 048752

Lutron document 048752 gives five steps, in the document's order.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

  1. Measure the window depth

Measure the reveal depth where the blind would sit. Take off an allowance for cranks, handles or other hardware in the blind's path.

Use the reduced figure from here on.

Warning: Lutron marks the hardware allowance "IMPORTANT": cranks, handles and similar hardware may interfere with the blind's normal movement.

  2. Find the case

Place the window depth in its band.

Case A is under 2 in (50.8 mm) and case B up to 2 1/2 in (63.5 mm). Case C runs up to 3 5/8 in (92 mm) and case D beyond.

    Clearance: Band limits 2 in (50.8 mm), 2 1/2 in (63.5 mm), 3 5/8 in (92 mm)

  3. Size partial-recess returns (case B)

Subtract the window depth from the 3 in (76.2 mm) standard return. Lutron's example: a 2 1/4 in window gives 3/4 in returns.

Clearance: Custom return 1/2 in to 1 in (12.7 mm to 25.4 mm)

Check: The calculated return sits inside the partial-recess range.

  4. Specify no returns for cases C and D

Case C recesses partly but would need a return under 1/2 in (12.7 mm), so order no returns and expect visible cut edges. Case D allows the blind and valance to recess fully, also with no returns.

  5. Size outside-mount returns on spacers or trim

Add the spacer or trim protrusion to the 3 in (76.2 mm) standard return. On 3/4 in (19 mm) trim that gives 3 3/4 in (95.25 mm).

Above trim, order the blind as wide as the trim.

Clearance: Custom return 3 1/8 in to 4 in (79.4 mm to 101.6 mm)

Check: The calculated return sits inside the outside-mount range.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 048752
  • Reduce the window depth for hardware that could interfere with the blind
  • Valance cut edges stay visible on partial-recess inside mounts in case C

Facts Lutron states in 048752

The values Lutron document 048752 states, as published:

Valance options
No returns for a full recess, returns for a partial recess or an outside mount
Standard return
3 in (76.2 mm) from the back of the valance, covering headrail and brackets on a typical outside mount without spacers
Partial-recess returns
1/2 in (12.7 mm) to 1 in (25.4 mm): standard return minus window depth
Outside mount returns
3 1/8 in (79.4 mm) to 4 in (101.6 mm): standard return plus the spacer or trim protrusion
Case A
Under 2 in (50.8 mm) deep: outside mount only
Case B
2 in to 2 1/2 in (50.8 mm to 63.5 mm) deep: partial recess with custom returns
Case C
2 1/2 in to 3 5/8 in (63.5 mm to 92 mm) deep: partial recess, no returns, valance cut edges visible
Case D
Over 3 5/8 in (92 mm) deep: blind and valance may recess fully, no returns
Measuring
Reduce the window depth for cranks, handles or other hardware in the blind's path
Above trim
Blind as wide as the trim so the returns clear it, with room for the valance and battery access

Questions about document 048752

The answers come from Lutron document 048752 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 048752?

Lutron's one-page Application Note #752, numbered 048752 in its file name only, for Serena and Triathlon Wood Blinds valances.

Which revision of 048752 is current?

Rev B, dated March 2020, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which wood blinds does 048752 cover?

Lutron Triathlon wood blinds.

What is the standard valance return?

Lutron Application Note #752 gives a default return of 3 in (76.2 mm), measured from the back of the valance. Lutron Application Note #752 says the standard return covers the headrail and brackets on a typical outside mount without spacers.

How are returns sized for a blind mounted on window trim?

Lutron Application Note #752 adds the protrusion to the standard return: 3 in plus 3/4 in (19 mm) trim gives 3 3/4 in (95.25 mm). In Lutron Application Note #752, outside-mount returns run from 3 1/8 in (79.4 mm) to 4 in (101.6 mm).

What clearance does a blind mounted above trim need?

Lutron Application Note #752 asks for room to attach the valance, and for battery access where it applies. Lutron recommends a blind as wide as the trim, so the returns clear it.

Which windows take a partial recess with custom returns?

Lutron Application Note #752 qualifies windows 2 in to 2 1/2 in (50.8 mm to 63.5 mm) deep. In Lutron Application Note #752, the return is 3 in (76.2 mm) minus the depth, between 1/2 in (12.7 mm) and 1 in (25.4 mm).

Will the valance edges show on a partly recessed blind?

Yes, for windows 2 1/2 in to 3 5/8 in (63.5 mm to 92 mm) deep, which Lutron Application Note #752 orders with "no returns". Beyond 3 5/8 in (92 mm), Lutron Application Note #752 lets the blind and valance recess fully within the window frame.
