Installation walk-through for 045586

Lutron document 045586 gives eight steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Pencil
  • Level
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • 3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit
  • 5/16 in (8 mm) hex driver bit
  • 6 in (152 mm) driver extension (recommended)
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) nut driver
  • Tape measure
  • Power drill

Fixings

  • 8 mounting screws, supplied
  • Fasteners suited to the surface, chosen for 400 lb (181.4 kg) per shade bracket
  • Pocket fasteners in pairs, when a pocket is used
  1. Unpack and check the surface

Check the box contents and plan the shade clear of trim, hardware, cranks, lock levers and drapery. The surface must be level and free of irregularities; correct it first.

Check: Two installers are on hand.

Warning: Lutron's caution names a 'risk of falling objects'.

  2. Install the pocket, if used

Set the pocket above the window, flap hanging feature away from the glass. Fix it with paired fasteners near the walls, pre-drilled where possible.

Level and shim it, test-fit the flap, then fit any end caps.

Clearance: Pairs every 36 in (914 mm), at least 6 in (152 mm) from the ends

Check: The flap engages along the full pocket length.

Warning: Do not over-tighten the pocket screws.

  3. Mark the bracket locations

Take the bracket-to-bracket width from the order or box label. Mark both extents, centered on the window opening.

Check: Both marks are centered on the opening.

  4. Mount the sub-brackets

Use the 4 rear holes for a wall mount or the 4 top holes for a ceiling mount. Align the left sub-bracket's outer edge with its mark, pilot-drill if wanted, and fasten.

    Repeat on the right.

Check: Tape and level confirm the width and that both sub-brackets are level.

  5. Hang the shade

Start at the drive end. Hook the shade bracket over the sub-bracket's upper tab and rest its lower tab in the lower slot.

    Repeat at the idler end.

Check: Both shade brackets are seated.

Warning: Two people support the shade throughout.

  6. Center and secure

Slide the shade until the light gaps match. Tighten the securing screw under each shade bracket, drive end first, so it sits behind the retaining feature.

Clearance: 1/4 in (6 mm) minimum where possible

Check: The brackets are firm and nothing touches the fabric.

Warning: Keeping the fabric clear of every surrounding object is the installer's job.

  7. Level the roll (optional)

A roll that is not level can telescope. Turn the idler leveling screw from below with the #2 Phillips: counter-clockwise raises the idler end, clockwise lowers it.

Check: The level reads true across the roll.

  8. Wire and set limits

Follow 045520 for power wiring and limits. Models CMRJ-C and CMRJ-C-N follow 045588 for the receiver.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045586
  • Falling objects: minor or moderate injury if the mounting steps are ignored.
  • Lutron requires 2 people for the installation.
  • The shade and any pocket must fix to blocking or suitable structural material.
  • Fasteners rated so each shade bracket holds 400 lb (181.4 kg).
  • Tall shades or uneven construction may leave less than 1/4 in (6 mm) clearance.

Count the pocket fastener pairs from 045586

Lutron document 045586 spaces the fastener pairs along the pocket: one at each end, at least 6 in (152 mm) in from the end. The rest sit at most 36 in (914 mm) apart.

Enter the pocket length to count the fastener pairs along the pocket.
