Installation walk-through for 045777
Lutron document 045777 gives twelve steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.
The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.
Tools
- Power drill / driver
- Driver bit (size and type may vary)
- Drill bit (size and type may vary)
- Hand driver (size and type may vary)
- Drill/driver extensions, at least 4 in (102 mm)
Fixings
- Mounting screws supplied, or fasteners the installer chooses for the surface
- Screw count: 2 per end bracket cover, 4 per center bracket cover
- Screw covers supplied with the decorative cover
- Optional shims 1/16 in (1.6 mm), matching the number under the bracket
- At most 2 shims, 1/8 in (3 mm) total, per bracket or cover
Take the shade out of the brackets
Decorative covers go over brackets that are already mounted. If a shade is hanging in the brackets, take it down first, following the removal instructions supplied with the shade.
Check: Brackets empty and accessible
Warning: Two people remove and reinstall a shade
Confirm the backing and choose the fasteners
Check that blocking or other suitable structural material sits behind each cover position. The supplied mounting screws may not suit every location, so choose fasteners that match the mounting surface.
Check: Structural backing at every fixing point; fasteners chosen for the surface
Warning: The installer is responsible for fasteners suited to the mounting surface
Remove the original bracket screw covers
Take the existing screw covers off the shade brackets. The decorative cover brings larger screw covers that also hide the bracket screws, so the originals will not fit back.
Check: Original screw covers off and set aside
Match the shims
Where the bracket was mounted on one or more shims, mount the decorative cover on the same number of shims. Lutron document 045777 shows a 1/16 in (1.6 mm) optional shim with each decorative cover type in its components list.
Clearance: 1/16 in (1.6 mm) per optional shim; no more than 2 (1/8 in [3 mm] total) per bracket or cover
Check: Shim count under the cover equals the count under the bracket
Warning: Shim types are not interchangeable
Position the end bracket cover
Fit the end bracket decorative cover over and around the mounted end bracket, with any shims in place.
Check: Cover type matches the bracket: end cover on an end bracket
Warning: End and center covers are not interchangeable
Pre-drill and fix the end bracket cover
Pre-drill the two pilot holes, one per mounting screw. Drive the two fasteners about 90% of the way with the power driver.
Finish them by hand while easing the cover into its final position.
Check: Cover in its final position; 2 fasteners seated
Warning: Do not over-tighten
Add the end bracket screw cover
Fit the screw cover supplied with the decorative cover by sliding it on in the direction shown.
Check: Screw cover in place
Repeat at the remaining end brackets
Repeat steps 5 to 7 at each remaining end bracket. The end bracket sequence closes with putting the shade back.
Check: Every end bracket covered
Position the center bracket cover
Fit the center bracket decorative cover over and around the mounted center bracket, with any shims in place.
Check: Center cover on a center bracket
Pre-drill and fix the center bracket cover
Pre-drill the four pilot holes, one per mounting screw. Drive the four fasteners about 90% of the way with the power driver.
Finish them by hand while adjusting the cover to its final position.
Check: Cover in its final position; 4 fasteners seated
Warning: Do not over-tighten
Add the center bracket screw covers
Fit the screw covers supplied with the decorative cover, sliding each one on in the direction shown.
Check: All screw covers in place
Repeat at remaining center brackets, rehang shades
Repeat steps 9 to 11 at each remaining center bracket, then reinstall the shades following the instructions supplied with them.
Check: Every bracket covered and every shade back in its brackets
Warning: Two people reinstall each shade
Requirements Lutron states in 045777
What the guide requires for a Palladiom shade before and during installation:
- Shade off first
- Any shade in the brackets comes out first and goes back afterwards, with two people for both
- Two cover types
- End bracket covers and center bracket covers are not interchangeable
- Original screw covers
- The existing screw covers come off and cannot go back while the decorative cover is on
- Fasteners and substrate
- Blocking or other structural material, with fasteners the installer chooses because the supplied screws may not suit every location
- Shims
- Match the number of shims under the bracket
- Optional shims 1/16 in (1.6 mm) each
- No more than two, 1/8 in (3 mm) total, per bracket or cover
- Shim types are not interchangeable
- Fixing count and tightening
- Two fasteners on an end bracket cover, four on a center bracket cover
- Driven to 90% with a power driver
- Finished by hand while adjusting the position
- Never over-tightened
- Tools
- Power drill or driver, driver bit, drill bit and hand driver
- Extensions
- Lutron recommends drill and driver extensions at least 4 in (102 mm) long to avoid damaging brackets and covers
- Pilot holes
- One pilot hole pre-drilled for each mounting screw, so the fasteners land precisely and the cover sits right
- Larger screw covers
- Supplied with the decorative cover to hide the bracket screws: one per end cover, more than one per center cover
- Fitting the screw covers
- Each slides on in the direction the figure shows
- Finishing the job
- The steps repeat at every remaining bracket of the same type, then the shades go back in the brackets
- Safety caution
- Lutron marks the work as a risk of falling objects: minor to moderate injury if the instructions are not followed
