Fixings
- 12 self-drilling mounting screws, or fasteners to suit the conditions
- Screw count: 3 per upper bracket assembly
- Screw count: 1 per lower anchor on a floor or sill
- Screw count: 2 per lower bracket on a wall or jamb
- 2 #10-32 bracket assembly screws with 2 #10-32 lower bracket lock nuts
- 2 1/4-28 jam nuts
- 2 pins with 2 retaining rings
- 3 cable compression sleeves
Install the shade
Mount the roller shade first, following the chassis install guide supplied with it.
Before going further, make sure there is room for the upper and lower cable anchors. Any sag of the fabric must not get in the way of the shade's operation.
Check: Space confirmed for both pairs of anchors and for fabric sag
Plan the anchor positions
Set the cables at the same width as the fabric, plumb and square. A laser, or a check of the diagonals between opposite cable ends, helps line up the top and bottom points.
Seen from the side, both cables must sit in one plane. Cables out of plane leave the fabric sagging unevenly.
Clearance: Upper and lower cable widths equal within 1/2 in (13 mm)
Check: Laser or diagonals confirm the cables are square
Warning: Every installed anchor must withstand up to 300 lb (135 kg)
Install the upper cable anchor bracket assemblies
Fix each bracket assembly to the wall, ceiling or jamb with three mounting screws, or fasteners suited to the conditions. Repeat for the second bracket assembly.
Check: Both upper assemblies fixed into material that holds the load
Warning: Upper anchors must withstand up to 300 lb (135 kg), or minor or moderate injury could result
Attach the cable to the upper anchor
Line up the hole in the turnbuckle with the hole in the upper cable anchor and push the pin through. Lock the pin by inserting the retaining ring into its hole and rotating the ring.
Run a jam nut fully onto the threaded end of the cable. Thread the cable end into the turnbuckle by the initial turns the chart gives for its length and diameter.
Final tension follows in step 8, before the shade is run.
Clearance: Initial turns: 18 down to 8 for 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable, 32 down to 17 for 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable, by cable length
Check: Retaining ring turned home and jam nut fully on
Mount the lower cable anchors
Option A fixes each lower anchor straight to the floor or sill with one self-drilling screw. The screw is driven with a 1/4 in socket.
Option B first fixes a lower mounting bracket to the wall or jamb with two self-drilling screws. The anchor then fastens to the bracket with the bracket assembly screw and nut.
Either way, other fasteners may be used where the mounting conditions call for them. Repeat for the second anchor.
Clearance: Both cables parallel within 1/2 in (13 mm) and at the fabric width
Check: Lower anchors line up under the upper anchors
Warning: Lower anchors must withstand up to 300 lb (135 kg), or minor or moderate injury could result
Prepare the lower end of the cable
Pull the cable tight beside the lower anchor and cut it. Cut 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable level with the top of the anchor, 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable at its mid-height.
Strip the nylon coating with a utility knife or wire stripper. Slide the lower anchor cap onto the stripped end, domed side up.
Slide on the compression sleeve, leaving 1/8 in (3 mm) of cable showing, and swage it with the Nicopress tool.
Clearance: Strip 3/8 in (10 mm) for 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable, 1/2 in (13 mm) for 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable. Leave 1/8 in (3 mm) of cable past the sleeve.
Check: Cap on the cable before the sleeve is swaged
Warning: Missing the cap means re-cutting the cable, which will likely leave it too short to finish
Attach the cable to the lower anchor
Push the swaged end into the lower cable anchor and slide the cap down to the bottom of the cable.
Screw the cap onto the anchor. Tighten it with soft jaw pliers so the cap's surface is not damaged.
Check: Cap screwed down with its surface unmarked
Tension the cable
Take up the remaining slack by finger tightening the cable end into the turnbuckle. Then wrench the turnbuckle by the extra turns the table gives for the cable length and diameter.
Tighten the jam nut and repeat for the second cable.
Clearance: Turns past finger tight: 2 up to 11 3/4 for 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable. For 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable, 2 1/4 up to 16 3/4 turns.
Check: Both cables tensioned to the same row of the table
Attach the bottom bar to the cables
Run the shade to 50% open with the buttons on the drive unit. Pull each cable around the front of the bottom bar endcap and slide it between the endcap and the bar.
Snap the cable into the endcap slot, then do the same at the other end. With both cables in place the shade should travel up and down freely.
If it binds in the endcaps, adjust the shade or cable position.
Check: Shade runs its full travel without binding
Adjust the limits if necessary
Reset the open and close limits if needed. Lutron document 045336 sends the installer to the packed basic wiring and setup guide for the limit steps.
Troubleshoot
Cables out of parallel or out of plane call for moving the upper or lower anchors. Fabric sagging onto the window needs a tension check or a moved shade.
Uneven sag or a hembar out of level calls for a level shade and equal cable tension. The step 8 table sets tension, the cable centered in the endcap loop.
A binding hembar: move the shade sideways, cables parallel to the fabric edge. Telescoping fabric: Lutron App note 411.
Requirements Lutron states in 045336
What the guide requires for a Sivoia QS shade before and during installation:
- Scope
- Adds the cable guide to a roller shade already installed per the chassis install guide packed with it. Wiring and limit setting stay with the basic wiring and setup guide.
- Anchor load
- Each upper and lower cable anchor, once installed, must withstand up to 300 lb (135 kg). Fasteners suit the wall, ceiling, jamb, floor or sill.
- Cable geometry
- Cable width equal to fabric width
- Cables plumb, square and in one plane
- Upper and lower cable widths equal within 1/2 in (13 mm)
- Both cables parallel within 1/2 in (13 mm)
- A laser or diagonal measurements are suggested
- Cable sizes
- 3/32 in (2.4 mm) nylon outer diameter over 1/16 in (1.6 mm) bare cable
- 1/8 in (3.2 mm) nylon outer diameter over 3/32 in (2.4 mm) bare cable
- Tabled to 144 in (3700 mm) and 240 in (6100 mm) respectively
- Cutting and stripping
- The 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable is cut level with the top of the lower anchor and stripped 3/8 in (10 mm). The 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable is cut at mid-height of the anchor and stripped 1/2 in (13 mm).
- Swaging
- Nicopress #64-CGMP (slot C) for the 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable
- Nicopress #51-MJ (slot J) for the 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable
- The compression sleeve sits with 1/8 in (3 mm) of cable showing
- Lower anchor cap on the cable first, or the cable is re-cut
- Initial turns into the turnbuckle
- Before final tension the cable end is threaded into the turnbuckle, fewer turns as the cable gets longer. 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable takes 18 turns falling to 8, and 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable 32 falling to 17.
- Final tension
- After finger tightening, a wrench turns the turnbuckle past finger tight by cable length, then the jam nut is tightened. The 3/32 in (2.4 mm) cable takes 2 turns rising to 11 3/4, the 1/8 in (3.2 mm) cable 2 1/4 rising to 16 3/4.
- Lower anchor mounting
- To the floor or sill: directly, with a self-drilling screw and a 1/4 in socket. To the wall or jamb: through the lower mounting bracket, two self-drilling screws, the #10-32 bracket screw and lock nut.
- Bottom bar
- At 50% open, each cable passes around the front of the bottom bar endcap and snaps into its slot. The shade must then travel without binding.
- Environment and care
- Indoor only, 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C), 0 to 90% humidity, non-condensing
- No bleach-based products on the assembly
- Cables for Lutron shading products only
- Parts
- 2 cables, 2 turnbuckles, 2 upper and 2 lower cable anchors
- 2 lower mounting brackets, 3 compression sleeves, 12 self-drilling screws
- Pins, rings, caps, jam nuts and bracket screws
