Installation walk-through for 045612

Lutron document 045612 gives 14 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Power drill
  • 3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver bit
  • 6 in extension recommended
  • Level
  • Hand tool for the retaining screws
  • Screwdriver, for the bracket release tabs
  • Low-tack masking tape, optional, for the fascia finish

Fixings

  • Mounting screws, 4 or 8, supplied
  • Installer-chosen fasteners suited to the structure and mounting conditions
  • Retaining screw atop each shade bracket, factory fitted with a yellow tag
  • D-cell alkaline batteries: 6 or 8 (12 or 16 with Battery Boost)
  1. Unpack and check the parts

Check the Mounting Rail, shade assembly and mounting screws. An outside mount without fascia adds bracket covers, which go on only after installation.

Any fascia ordered is packed separately in the same box.

Check: Every part for the order is present

  2. Check the shade tube is seated

From below, look at both ends where the tube meets the end brackets. Push the parts together if shipping has separated them.

Gather the listed tools and batteries.

Check: Both tube ends sit fully in their brackets

Warning: A tube that is not fully seated could fall and injure someone

  3. Hold up the rail and confirm clearance

Hold the rail in its final position: inside mounts screw through the top section, outside mounts through the back section. Shade size, trim depth and roll direction decide whether the rail can sit above the trim without extra blocking.

In that case the rail top sits at least 5 1/4 in (133 mm) over the trim. The trim is then at most 0.75 in (19 mm) deep.

Clearance: Clearance A at both ends: 1/4 in (6 mm) with fascia, 1/8 in (3 mm) without

Check: The rail is level, centered and parallel to the window

Warning: Short of clearance A at either end, stop: check the order, re-measure and call Lutron Technical Support

  4. Plan, mark and pre-drill

Plan screws into a structural member such as a stud. Place a pair near each end, then further pairs at about equal spacing along the grooves in the rail.

Mark in pencil and drill the rail with the 3/16 in (4.8 mm) bit.

Clearance: End pairs 2 in to 3 in (52 mm to 76 mm) from each end

Warning: Two installers for shades over 48 in (1219 mm)

  5. Fasten the rail

Fix the rail with fasteners suited to the surface, two screws at each location.

  6. Recheck and clean the rail

Confirm clearance A again and move the rail if it falls short. Run a brush or cloth along the rail to clear burrs, shavings and debris.

Clearance: Clearance A at both ends, as in step 3

Check: The rail is clean end to end

  7. Hang the shade

Rest each end bracket, bottom first, on the rail's lower shelf, then push the top in until both brackets click. The shade tilts forward and is not yet secure, so continue at once.

Check: A click at both ends

Warning: Attach any fascia before hanging the shade

  8. Open the battery cover

With fascia, pull it out slightly and down; without fascia, pull the cover forward and down. Low-tack tape on an architectural fascia edge protects the finish.

  9. Fit the retaining screws

Remove the yellow tag from the retaining screw at the top of each bracket. Tilt the bracket upright and thread the screw into the rail channel by hand.

Check: Both brackets upright, screws hand-tight

Warning: Hand tool only and no overtightening; never substitute a missing screw, remove the shade and contact Lutron

  10. Install the batteries

Load new D-cell alkaline batteries as the holder diagram shows, one brand and type only. A Battery Boost shade runs on either holder, but full life needs new cells in both.

Close the holder: with fascia push up and in, without fascia swing the cover up.

    Check: The cover is closed

  11. Assign a control

Use the Lutron App with a Smart Bridge, or the RadioRA 2 or HomeWorks QS software. For a Pico, tap the Shade Button and hold Close.

For a 4-Group remote, tap the Shade Button and hold a Shade Group button.

Check: The Shade Button flashes for each assignment

  12. Adjust limits or favorite (optional)

Tap the Shade Button and hold Open and Raise until it flashes and stays lit. Move the shade, then hold Open (upper) or Close (lower).

For a favorite, position the shade and hold the Favorite button.

Check: The Shade Button flashes when saved

Warning: On a shared control, pull one battery from each shade whose favorite should stay

  13. Restore factory defaults (if needed)

Triple tap the Shade Button and hold until the LED blinks green rapidly. Then triple tap again until it blinks red and green three times and goes out.

    Check: The LED turns off

Warning: Assignments and favorite are cleared; limits stay

  14. Remove the shade (if needed)

Raise the shade fully, take out the batteries and any bracket covers, and loosen the retaining screws. Support the shade and press each bracket's release tab down with a screwdriver.

Over 72 in (1829 mm), lift near the center to free the Center Support.

    Check: The fabric stays rolled

Warning: Use a helper on shades over 48 in (1219 mm)

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045612
  • Falling objects: skipping a mounting instruction risks minor to moderate injury
  • Confirm the brackets are engaged and the retaining screws are tight before use
  • Refit a removed shade by repeating the steps from rail cleaning to batteries

Requirements Lutron states in 045612

What the guide requires for a Triathlon shade before and during installation:

Mounting screw zones
Two screws 2 to 3 in (52 to 76 mm) from each end, then pairs at roughly equal spacing along the rail's grooved screw line
Pre-drill size
3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit through the rail, then a 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver bit for the fasteners
