Installation walk-through for 045694

Lutron document 045694 gives 15 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Power tool with #2 Phillips driver bit

Fixings

  • 2 EDU puck screws from the original tube, where present
  • The puck screws self-drill into the EDU puck when refitted
  • Rubber EDU puck (LMR-C-R kit): only for a tube without screw holes
  1. Lay the shade out on a work surface

Take the shade down from its brackets and disconnect its wiring, as the chassis installation and setup guide 045657 describes. Lay it on a clean, level surface with room to unroll the fabric and draw the EDU out.

Check: Enough clear length to unroll the whole fabric

Warning: Two people carry out the steps on any shade wider than 48 in (1219 mm)

  2. Unroll the fabric to bare the tube

Unroll the fabric from the shade tube, wrapping it loosely around the bottom bar, until the tube is exposed.

    Check: Shade tube exposed

  3. Take out any EDU puck screws

Skip to step 4 if the tube has no EDU puck screws.

Some tubes carry two EDU puck screws near the drive end. Remove both and keep them for the second section.

Clearance: EDU puck screws sit 16 in (406 mm) from the drive end

Check: Screws removed and kept, or none present

  4. Pry the bearing sleeve off the tube

Push the flat-blade screwdriver tip into the joint between the shade tube and the EDU bearing sleeve. Twist and pry with care until the two separate.

Check: Bearing sleeve disengaged from the shade tube

  5. Slide the EDU out

With the bearing sleeve free, slide the EDU all the way out of the old tube.

Check: EDU fully clear of the old tube

  6. Set the EDU aside and clear the bench

Put the EDU aside for the new roller and move what is left of the old shade off the bench.

Check: Work area clear for the replacement roller

  7. Lay out the replacement roller

Place the pre-assembled LMR-C-R replacement roller on the work surface.

  8. Discard the empty bearing sleeve

Pull the empty bearing sleeve out of the drive end of the new tube and discard it. Leave the protective foam packing on the bottom bar for now.

Check: Drive end open; foam packing still on the bottom bar

  9. Unroll the new fabric

Unroll the fabric from the new tube, wrapping it loosely around the bottom bar. Stop when the outer surface of the tube shows.

Check: Outer surface of the new tube exposed

Warning: Take care not to crease or soil the fabric

  10. Check for screw holes, fit the rubber puck

Where screws came out at step 3, look for holes at the same distance from the new tube's drive end. With holes, keep the original EDU puck and go on.

With no holes, swap the existing puck for the rubber EDU puck from the kit. The figure labels read remove 2 screws, separate and discard, install the rubber puck.

Clearance: Screw holes in the new tube: 16 in (406 mm) from the drive end

Check: Screw holes found, or the rubber EDU puck fitted

  11. Insert the EDU puck

Line up the grooves in the EDU puck with the splines inside the tube and push the puck in.

Check: Puck entered on the splines

  12. Seat the bearing sleeve

Keep pushing the EDU in and line up the bearing sleeve grooves with the tube splines. Push until the sleeve sits square against the tube end.

Check: Bearing sleeve squarely seated against the end of the tube

  13. Refit the puck screws (original puck only)

Skip to step 14 if the rubber puck went in at step 10.

Where the original puck stayed, drive the screws kept from step 3 back in with the power tool.

The screws self-drill into the puck; tighten until the heads are fully seated.

    Check: Screw heads fully seated

  14. Re-wrap the fabric and remove the packing

Reverse step 9 to roll all the fabric back onto the tube. Take the foam packing off the bottom bar; the converted shade is then ready to hang.

Check: Fabric straight and evenly wrapped; packing removed

Warning: Keep the fabric straight and evenly wrapped as it goes back on

  15. Install the converted shade

Hang and reconnect the shade in its original brackets, following Sections 3 to 6 of guide 045657.

The EDU keeps its control assignments and limit settings. Lutron notes the limits may need adjusting after the fabric is re-wrapped.

Check: Limits verified, or adjusted where needed

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045694
  • Risk of falling objects: minor to moderate injury if the steps are not followed
  • For factory trained and equipped installers of Lutron Palladiom shades only
  • Two people for any shade wider than 48 in (1219 mm)
  • Avoid creasing or soiling the fabric while it is off the tube

Requirements Lutron states in 045694

What the guide requires for a Palladiom shade before and during installation:

Who may do the work
Factory trained and equipped installers of Lutron Palladiom shades
Before starting
The shade is taken out of its brackets and disconnected from its wiring first
Replacement roller contents
LMR-C-R ships pre-assembled, plus a rubber EDU puck used only when required
  • Shade tube
  • Idler, with spring if applicable
  • Fabric and bottom bar
Tools
Flat-blade screwdriver and a power tool with a #2 Phillips driver bit
Two-person rule
Shades wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need two people
EDU puck screws
Two screws on some shade tubes, 16 in (406 mm) from the drive end, removed before the EDU comes out
Refitting the screws
Back into the new tube where it has matching screw holes, self-drilling into the puck
Rubber puck use
Fitted in place of the existing puck only when the replacement tube has no screw holes 16 in (406 mm) from the drive end
Programming after the swap
The EDU keeps its control assignments and limit settings, but limits may need adjusting because the fabric wrap changes
Re-installation
Sections 3 to 6 of the Palladiom shading system chassis installation and setup guide 045657
Seating the EDU
Grooves in the EDU puck, then in the bearing sleeve, line up with the splines inside the shade tube
Bearing sleeve
Pushed in until it sits squarely against the tube end
Safety caution
Lutron marks the work as a risk of falling objects: minor to moderate injury if the instructions are not followed
