Installation walk-through for 045964

Lutron document 045964 gives 15 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Power drill
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver bit
  • 6 in extension, recommended
  • 3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit, fascia shades
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (tension and upstop adjustment)

Fixings

  • Mounting brackets (included; quantity varies with shade size)
  • Mounting screws, included, one per bracket
  • Fascia shade screws: quantity varies with shade size
  • Mounting rail with bracket locks, factory-fitted to a fascia shade
  • Spacers (included only when outside mount above trim is specified)
  • Expansion anchors, toggle bolts or other fasteners, not included
  • Needed on surfaces other than studs or solid trim
  • Blocking where the screws would not reach solid material
  1. Section A: check the parts and tools

For a shade without fascia, the box holds the roller shade assembly, the mounting brackets and one screw per bracket.

Have a pencil, tape measure, level, power drill and a 1/4 in (6 mm) hex driver bit ready, with a 6 in extension recommended. The shade is for indoor use only.

  2. Section A: mark and fix the brackets

Hold the shade up to the mounting surface, settle its position and pencil the screw locations. Fit a bracket 5 in to 7 in (127 mm to 178 mm) from each end, screwed into studs or solid trim.

On other surfaces use anchors or toggle bolts, and space any extra brackets equally between the outer two.

On an inside mount the release tab points toward the room; on an outside mount it points downward.

Clearance: 5 in to 7 in (127 mm to 178 mm) from each end of the shade

Check: Brackets hold the shade level, centered on and parallel to the window opening

Warning: Shades wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need two people

  3. Section A: hang the shade

Hook the lip of the shade bar onto the brackets. Swing the other side of the bar up into the brackets until it locks into each one.

Then go to section C for any adjustment.

Check: An audible click at every bracket

  4. Section B: check the parts and tools

For a shade with fascia, the box holds the shade, its attached mounting rail and bracket locks, screws and fascia. Spacers come only for an above-trim mount.

The tools are the same as section A plus a 3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit. When replacing an existing fascia shade, read sections B.9 and B.10 (steps 12 and 13 here) first.

  5. Section B: take the rail off the shade

Slide each bracket lock away from its end of the mounting rail. Holding the shade firmly, push down the release tab on top of each end bracket to free the shade.

Check: The shade is supported throughout

  6. Section B: check clearance and prepare the rail

Hold the rail in place and confirm minimum clearance A at both ends so the shade can be attached later. Plan the screws into solid material, adding blocking where needed.

Mark a screw 3 in to 5 in (76 mm to 127 mm) from each rail end. On rails wider than 48 in (1219 mm) mark two more between them.

Pre-drill the rail at each mark with the 3/16 in (4.8 mm) bit.

Clearance: Clearance A 1/4 in (6 mm) at both ends. Screws 3 in to 5 in (76 mm to 127 mm) from each end, at least 10 in (254 mm) apart.

Check: Fasteners suit the mounting surface

  7. Section B: fix the rail

Fasten the rail with fasteners suited to the surface. On an inside mount keep equal depth on both sides.

On trim, line the top of the rail up with the top edge of the trim. Above trim, add the spacers for clearance, which shallow trim or a small shade may not need.

Check: The rail is level, centered on and parallel to the window

Warning: Two people for rails wider than 48 in (1219 mm)

  8. Section B: prepare the shade

Lay the shade on a clean, level surface. Lift the fascia from the bottom, pull it up and away, take out all foam inserts and set it aside.

Slide the support bracket marked L fully to the left end and the one marked R to the right end. Space any center brackets marked C, up to 3, evenly across the shade, shifting them clear of the rail screws.

Check: L and R brackets sit at the ends as far as they go

  9. Section B: hang the shade on the rail

Rest the heel of each support bracket on the lower shelf of the mounting rail. Rotate the shade up and back into the rail until every support bracket locks.

Check: An audible click at each end and secure engagement along the rail

Warning: Risk of falling objects: attach the shade as shown and verify it is held

  10. Section B: engage the bracket locks

Push the left bracket lock fully toward the left end of the rail until it gives a light click. Do the same with the right lock at the right end.

Each lock secures its support bracket to the rail.

    Check: Both locks have clicked

  11. Section B: attach the fascia

For architectural fascia only, fit the endcaps first, following the guide packed with them. Seat the flange of the fascia support rail in the upper slots of the support brackets and push firmly.

Check: The fascia locks in with an audible click

  12. Section B: remove the shade later

Raise the shade fully and take off the fascia. Slide each bracket lock away from its rail end.

Holding the shade firmly, press the release tab on top of each support bracket. Handle the free shade so the fabric is not damaged.

Refit it by following sections B.5 to B.8 of the document (steps 8 to 11 here).

Warning: Do not let the fabric unroll; a second person is recommended above 48 in (1219 mm)

  13. Section B: replacing an existing shade

Remove any mounting rail left from an earlier installation. Use the mounting rail supplied with the new shade.

Check: The new rail is the one in the box

Warning: An old mounting rail may not fit the included support brackets

  14. Section C: adjust the spring tension (optional)

With the shade fully raised, turn the end adjuster with a flat-blade screwdriver. Add tension if the shade rises slowly or does not retract fully.

Reduce it if the shade resists pulling down or rises too quickly. The diagram gives the end and direction for regular and reverse roll.

Check: Recheck the retraction after each small step

  15. Section C: adjust the upstop (optional)

Let the shade retract and stop at the top. If the bottom bar stops too high, lower the upstop; if it stops too low, raise it.

Use a flat-blade screwdriver at the end the diagram shows for regular or reverse roll.

Check: Recheck the stopping height after each small step
