Installation walk-through for 045971

Lutron document 045971 gives 13 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Pliers
  • Wire cutter
  • Small flat head screwdriver
  • 3/16 in (4.8 mm) drill bit
  • 5/16 in (8 mm) hex driver bit
  • 6 in extension, recommended
  • Tape measure
  • Power drill

Fixings

  • 4 mounting screws (supplied)
  • 2 bracket-tension device screws and 2 tension device mounting screws (supplied)
  • 2 pull-chain stops (supplied)
  • Bracket fasteners for the surface, installer's choice
  • Each bracket to support 200 lbs (90.1 kg) on blocking or structure
  • Pocket fasteners, installer's choice, in pairs into a solid structural member
  • Tension device: anchors suited to the surface where supplied screws do not
  1. Check the parts and read the notes

Lutron lists the shade with its tension device fitted, an idler bracket, a clutch bracket and 2 more brackets. The box also holds 4 mounting screws, 2 chain stops and two pairs of tension device screws.

Plan clearance from trim, hardware, cranks, lock levers and drapery, then check the mounting surface is level and sound. A shade wider than 48 in (1219 mm) needs two installers.

Check: All parts present; mounting surface level and free of irregularities

Warning: Risk of falling objects: each bracket must carry 200 lbs (90.1 kg) on blocking or structure

  2. Fit the pocket endcaps, pocket only

Skip to step 5 if there is no pocket or the pocket already exists.

Slide the two tabs of each endcap into the pocket until it sits flush with the outside. Friction holds it, with no fasteners.

Check: Endcap flush with the pocket end

  3. Check the pocket orientation

Compare the pocket with the section 2.2 drawings. The drawings show a regular roll and a reverse roll shade, with the flap hanger and the glass side marked.

Turn the pocket to match the shade ordered.

Check: Pocket turned to match the ordered roll direction

  4. Fasten the pocket

Shim where the surface is irregular so the pocket sits level with its walls plumb. Between two jambs or walls leave a gap at each end for expansion.

Drive fasteners in pairs through the pocket ceiling into a solid structural member, one pair at least every 24 in (610 mm). Set each within 1 in (25 mm) of the front or rear wall.

Keep 3 in (76 mm) clear at each end and at any bracket position.

Clearance: Pairs 24 in (610 mm) max. apart, 1 in (25 mm) max. from the walls. 3 in (76 mm) min. clear at the ends, 1/8 in (3 mm) end gap between jambs.

Check: Pocket level, untwisted, walls plumb

Warning: A single row or zig-zag of screws lets the pocket twist; without the end gap the pocket may buckle

  5. Mark the bracket positions

Take the bracket-to-bracket width from the original order or the label on the shipping box. Mark its two ends on the wall, ceiling or pocket ceiling, centered on the window opening.

    Clearance: Bracket-to-bracket width ± 1/16 in (1.6 mm)

Check: Marks centered on the opening and the right distance apart

  6. Mount the clutch and idler brackets

Mount on the wall, jamb or ceiling as the order intends. Line the clutch bracket's outer edge up with its mark and pencil the center of its 2 mounting holes.

Drill pilot holes if wanted and fasten it; repeat at the other mark for the idler bracket. In a pocket, the screws must pass through the pocket into blocking; a jamb mount may need shims.

Check: Brackets vertical or horizontal, not on uneven surfaces or contoured trim

Warning: The pocket alone will not hold the shade

  7. Check the bracket distance and level

Re-measure the bracket-to-bracket distance with the tape measure and correct it if needed. Lay the level across the two brackets and correct until they sit level with each other.

    Clearance: Re-measured width within ± 1/16 in (1.6 mm)

Check: Clutch and idler supports level or plumb

Warning: Never hang the shade in brackets that are deformed, damaged or badly mounted

  8. Hang the clutch end

Line the clutch center hole up with the clutch support tab, tab edges between the splines inside the hole. Push the shade onto the tab as far as it will go.

Check: Clutch fully home on the support tab

  9. Hang the idler end

Open the idler support latch and line the idler pin up with the slot. Lower the idler end until the pin rests in it, then close the latch to capture the pin.

Clearance: Pin overhang through the slot at least 1/16 in (1.6 mm); side-to-side play no more than 1/8 in (3 mm)

Check: Latch closed; pin protrudes; play within the limit

  10. Set the upper limit

Pull the chain until the shade reaches the fully raised position you want.

Fit a chain stop on the first fully exposed bead below the clutch chain guide. Use the side of the loop nearer the fabric drop and crimp it firmly with the pliers.

Check: Shade stops at the chosen top position

  11. Set the lower limit

Lower the shade to the fully lowered position you want. Fit the second stop on the first fully exposed bead below the chain guide.

Use the side of the loop farther from the fabric drop and crimp it.

Check: Shade stops at the chosen bottom position

  12. Mount the pull-chain tension device

Let the chain hang straight down and choose a spot at the lowest point of the final loop. The spot, on a wall, mullion, sill or floor, must be within comfortable reach of a person of typical height.

Pull the device down to raise its plunger fully and mark an erasable line under it.

Fix the device or its bracket with its bottom edge on the line. Longer screws go into the surface, shorter screws only between device and bracket.

Check: Device at the lowest point of the loop; chain held in tension

Warning: Window blind cords can strangle a child: keep cords out of reach. Fix the device to the wall or floor with anchors that suit the surface.

  13. Verify operation

Run the shade to its upper limit and back to its lower limit several times and watch it. Confirm the brackets hold the operating load, the chain runs smoothly through the tension device and the clutch.

Confirm the fabric rolls freely without touching anything. Some telescoping is normal; a lot of it suggests the shade is not level.

Check: Brackets secure; chain smooth; fabric free; telescoping slight

  • Keep cords out of reach and fix the tension device to the wall or floor
  • The fasteners supplied with the tension device may not suit every surface
  • Use anchors that match the surface
  • The tension device stops the shade operating fully until it is fitted
  • If adjustments or repairs are needed, notify the original provider
  • Qualified personnel must make all adjustments and repairs

Count the pocket fastener pairs from 045971

Lutron document 045971 spaces the fastener pairs along the pocket: one at each end, at least 3 in (76 mm) in from the end. The rest sit at most 24 in (610 mm) apart.

Enter the pocket length to count the fastener pairs along the pocket.

Questions about document 045971

The answers come from Lutron document 045971 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 045971?

Lutron's eight-page guide: two English pages repeated in French, Spanish and Portuguese, with no wiring or torque values.

Which revision of 045971 is current?

Rev A, dated April 2024, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 15 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 045971 cover?

Lutron Sivoia QS roller shades.

Where does the pull-chain tension device go?

At the lowest point of the final chain loop, on a wall, mullion, sill or floor, per Lutron document 045971.

The device must sit low enough for a person of typical height to operate the chain. The pre-installed device meets ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022, and the shade is designed not to operate fully until it is fitted.

Can the manual shade be mounted inside a pocket?

Yes. Lutron document 045971 includes a pocket section, which is skipped for a no-pocket or existing-pocket installation.
