Installation walk-through for 045843
Lutron document 045843 gives twelve steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.
The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.
Tools
- Level
- #2 Phillips screwdriver
- 1/4 in (6 mm) hex-head driver
- 6 in (152 mm) driver extension, recommended
- Tape measure
- Power drill
Fixings
- Self-drilling screws in the bracket kits, for solid wood structural members
- Shade bracket: 4 screws
- Bracket shims and a cable tie anchor (mounting bracket kit)
- Pocket fasteners, installer-chosen for the surface and load, in pairs
Prepare to install
Read the important notes and both cautions. Check the Lutron items: the Roller 64 WIDR shade or shades, the pocket, and the optional endcaps and flap.
Mounting bracket kits hold WIDR shade brackets, screws, shims and a cable tie anchor, sometimes packed inside a shade box. Gather the level, Phillips screwdriver, hex-head driver, tape measure and drill.
Check: Only WIDR brackets and parts on site
Warning: Do not substitute non-WIDR Roller 64 parts: Lutron states the result is unsafe
Fit the pocket endcaps, if used
Slide the two tabs of each endcap into the pocket until the endcap sits flush with the outside. Friction holds it, so no fasteners are needed.
Check: Endcap flush with the pocket end
Check the pocket orientation
Compare the pocket with the section 2.2 drawings of a regular roll and a reverse roll shade. The drawings mark the flap hanger and the glass side.
Turn the pocket to match the roll direction ordered.
Check: Flap hanger on the side the drawing shows for the ordered roll
Pre-drill the pocket for the cable
Drill the cable hole on the drive side, clear of the bracket position and of the moving shade. Make the hole large enough that the pocket can still be adjusted without pinching the wire.
Lutron suggests a ceiling, rear wall or jamb entry near the pocket end.
Clearance: Ceiling or rear wall entry: 1 1/2 in (38 mm) from the pocket end, 1/2 in (13 mm) from rear wall or ceiling respectively. Jamb entry: 1 1/2 in (38 mm) from the ceiling, 1/2 in (13 mm) from the rear wall.
Check: Hole on the drive side and clear of the bracket
Mount the pocket
With one person at each end, fasten the pocket through its ceiling into a solid structural member, in pairs only.
Place a pair every 24 in (610 mm), each fastener within 1 in (25 mm) of the front or rear wall. Leave the pocket ends and any other bracket positions clear.
Between two jambs or walls, leave an expansion gap at each end. Shim an uneven surface and keep checking the pocket is level, untwisted and plumb along its length.
Clearance: Pairs at most 24 in (610 mm) apart and at most 1 in (25 mm) from the walls. At least 3 in (76 mm) clear at the ends, with a 1/8 in (3 mm) end gap between jambs.
Check: Pocket ceiling level and walls plumb along the full length
Warning: A single row or zig-zag of fasteners lets the pocket twist; without the end gap the pocket may buckle
Mark the bracket locations
Mark both bracket positions in the mounted pocket, centered over the window, at the bracket-to-bracket distance. Never take the positions from the pocket or the shade, whose idler spring compresses as it goes in.
Leave room so the fabric cannot rub on trim, glass or a top treatment.
Clearance: Bracket-to-bracket = tube width + 1 1/2 in (38 mm)
Check: Marks centered over the window
Warning: Do not use the pocket or the uninstalled shade to set the bracket positions
Install the shade brackets
Center each bracket on the aligning ribs of the pocket ceiling and fix it with four screws. The supplied self-drilling screws suit solid wood structure.
For other substrates choose suitable fasteners and pre-drill pilot holes of the right size.
Check: Four screws in each bracket
Warning: The installer must confirm the surface and structure carry the shade and its 250 lbs (113.4 kg) operating load
Set the drive buttons and cables
At the drive end, turn the square mounting yoke so the control buttons face down, reachable from below the pocket. Run the power and control cables through a notch facing the room side or the window side.
Check: Buttons pointing down
Hang the shade
With one person at each end, fit the idler-end yoke over the bracket tabs and behind the retaining screw head. The lower notch sits around the screw.
Press the shade toward the idler bracket to compress the idler. Then fit the drive-end yoke over its tabs and behind its retaining screw head.
Check: Cables still in the chosen notch and not pinched
Warning: Two people are required, with 2 ladders or lifts where the brackets are out of reach. Both should review all steps first.
Check and secure the shade
Measure the idler-end light gap between the tube end and the outer face of the idler bracket. Move the brackets if it is out of tolerance.
Confirm the shade is level and centered on the opening. Tighten the retaining screw at each end with a hand screwdriver.
Clearance: Idler-end light gap 3/4 in (19 mm) ± 1/8 in (3 mm)
Check: Shade level and centered; idler at about 50% compression
Warning: Hand screwdriver only, and do not overtighten the retaining screws
Wire the shade and set limits
Wire the shade and set its limits with Lutron document 045520, Sivoia QS Basic Wiring and Setup, enclosed with it. Run the shade up and down several times and correct anything that interferes with it.
Check: Full travel with nothing in the way
Hang the optional pocket flap
Hang the flap on the flap hanger. Confirm it does not touch the fabric or get in the way of the shade.
On a tall shade with a large fabric roll, lower the shade first to make the flap easier to fit.
Check: Flap clear of the fabric
Warning: The upper limit must keep the bottom bar out of the pocket, below the dotted line in the drawing
Count the pocket fastener pairs from 045843
Lutron document 045843 spaces the fastener pairs along the pocket: one at each end, at least 3 in (76 mm) in from the end. The rest sit at most 24 in (610 mm) apart.
Enter the pocket length to count the fastener pairs along the pocket.
From Lutron document 045843, page 1; confirm against the PDF before you drill.
Requirements Lutron states in 045843
What the guide requires for a Sivoia QS Roller 64 shade before and during installation:
- Do not substitute parts
- Non-WIDR Roller 64 parts may look like a fit, but Lutron states using them gives an unsafe condition
- Bracket load
- Each shade bracket supports 250 lbs (113.4 kg), on blocking or other structural material, with installer-chosen fasteners
- Pocket fasteners
- In pairs through the pocket ceiling, never a single row or zig-zag
- A pair every 24 in (610 mm)
- No more than 1 in (25 mm) from the front and rear walls
- At least 3 in (76 mm) clear at each end and at bracket positions
- Pocket end clearance
- 1/8 in (3 mm) at each end when the pocket sits between two jambs or walls, for thermal expansion
- Pocket alignment
- Level and untwisted, front and back walls plumb, shimmed on an irregular surface and rechecked along the full length
- Pocket cable holes
- On the drive side, one of three suggested entries
- Ceiling: 1.5 in (38 mm) from pocket end, 0.5 in (13 mm) from rear wall
- Rear wall: 1.5 in (38 mm) from pocket end, 0.5 in (13 mm) from ceiling
- Jamb: 1.5 in (38 mm) from ceiling, 0.5 in (13 mm) from rear wall
- Bracket-to-bracket distance
- Tube width plus 1.5 in (38 mm), centered on the aligning ribs of the pocket ceiling
- Shade bracket screws
- 4 self-drilling screws per bracket into solid wood, or suitable fasteners with pre-drilled pilot holes in other substrates
- Idler light gap check
- 3/4 in (19 mm) plus or minus 1/8 in (3 mm), tube end to idler bracket outer face, about 50% idler compression
- Button and cable orientation
- Drive buttons face downward for access from below the pocket, cables leaving through the front or rear yoke notch
- Two-person work
- Mounting the pocket and hanging the shade each take 2 people, one at each end. Add 2 ladders or lifts where the brackets are out of reach from the floor.
- Operating environment
- 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C), 0 to 90% humidity non-condensing, indoor use only
- Upper limit
- Set so the bottom bar never rises into the pocket, staying below the line marked in the section 8 drawing
- Pocket flap
- Hangs on the flap hanger, never touching the fabric or hindering the shade. Lowering a tall shade with a large fabric roll makes it easier to fit.
