Tools
#2 Phillips screwdriver; 1/4 in (6 mm) hex-head driver; tape measure; level; power drill

Installation walk-through for 045929

Lutron document 045929 gives twelve steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex-head driver
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Power drill

Fixings

  • Bracket mounting screws, self-drilling, for solid wood: 4 per bracket
  • Top back cover mounting screws, not included: 2 at each end
  • Cover screw pairs: at least 1 per 24 in (610 mm) of width
  • Shims (supplied) and a cable tie and anchor
  • Spacer blocks, not included, where a wall mount must clear trim
  • Installer-chosen fasteners for other surfaces, 250 lbs (113.4 kg) per bracket
  1. Prepare to install

Read the important notes and check the Lutron items: regular-roll shade, shade brackets, mounting screws, shims, cable tie and anchor. Add the fascia, the optional top back cover and the fascia endcaps.

Gather the screwdriver, hex-head driver, tape measure, level and drill. Confirm the brackets will land on blocking or other structure.

Check: Structure behind every bracket position can carry 250 lbs (113.4 kg) per bracket

Warning: Risk of falling objects: follow every mounting instruction

  2. Plan the cable entry

Bring the cable out of the wall, header or jamb on the drive side and leave 12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm) exposed. Keep a wall entry as high as possible and a header entry near the wall, clear of the fabric roll.

If a top back cover is used, pre-drill it for the cable. A jamb entry needs no drilling: the bracket has a cutout at its upper rear and serves as the template.

Clearance: Cable hole: at least 1.5 in (38 mm) in from the top back cover's end

Check: Hole large enough to adjust the cover without pinching the cable

  3. Mount the top back cover (optional)

Skip to step 5 if no top back cover is used.

Check the surface is level for a header mount or plumb for a wall mount. Shim between the surface and the cover where needed.

Fix the cover with two screws at each end and at least one pair for every 24 in (610 mm) of width. The grooves in the cover are the screw guides.

Clearance: Screws at least 1.5 in (38 mm) from each cover end. Pairs at most 24 in (610 mm) apart

Check: Cover straight, not twisted or tilted

Warning: A twisted or tilted cover can cause fabric rub, telescoping or rough, noisy running. Never shim between the cover and the brackets.

  4. Fix the brackets in the top back cover

Mark the bracket positions in the cover, centered over the window opening, at the bracket-to-bracket distance.

Set the left bracket at its mark and drive four mounting screws through the cover into the surface. Fix the second bracket the same way, aligning the outside of each bracket with the edge of the cover.

    Clearance: Bracket-to-bracket = tube width + 1.5 in (38 mm)

Check: Both brackets at the marks and centered on the opening

  5. Mark the bracket locations (no top back cover)

Skip to step 7 if the brackets went into a top back cover.

Mark both brackets level and centered over the window, where the screws reach a structural member. Take the positions from the bracket-to-bracket distance, never from the shade, whose idler spring compresses as it goes in.

Leave room so the fabric cannot rub on trim, the window or a top treatment. A wall mount may need spacer blocks.

Clearance: Idler spring compressed to about 50% of travel at the correct distance

Check: Marks level, centered and over structure

Warning: Do not use the unmounted shade to set the bracket positions

  6. Mount the shade brackets

Fix each bracket at its marks with four mounting screws. Check that both brackets are plumb, level and aligned.

Add the supplied shims behind wall or header brackets where needed.

Check: Brackets plumb, level and aligned for smooth, quiet running

  7. Orient the buttons and route the drive cables

Turn the shade so the control buttons on the drive end face the front, reachable from the room side.

The square mounting yoke has a notch on each of its four sides. Run the drive cable up or down through the upper or lower notches for clearance.

    Check: Buttons facing the room

  8. Hang the shade

Fit the idler-end yoke over the bracket tabs and behind the head of the retaining screw.

Press the shade toward the idler bracket to compress the spring-loaded idler. Then fit the drive-end yoke over its tabs and behind its retaining screw head.

Check: Drive cables sit in the yoke notch and are not pinched

Warning: Shades wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need two people, one at each end, and may need two ladders or lifts

  9. Check and secure the shade

Measure the exposed part of the idler shoulder: Lutron sizes the shade so it reads about 3/8 in (9.5 mm) at the ordered bracket-to-bracket distance. If it reads more or less, move the brackets.

Confirm the shade is level and centered, then tighten the retaining screw at each end firmly with a hand screwdriver.

Clearance: Exposed idler shoulder about 3/8 in (9.5 mm)

Check: Shade level and centered on the opening

Warning: Use a hand screwdriver only on the retaining screws

  10. Wire the shade and set limits

Wire the shade and set the limits with Lutron document 045520, Sivoia QS Basic Wiring and Setup, shipped with it. Set the upper limit so the bottom bar stays below the fascia and top back cover at full raise.

Run the shade up and down several times and correct anything that gets in its way.

Check: Bottom bar hangs below the fascia when fully raised

Warning: An upper limit set too high draws the bottom bar into the top treatment

  11. Fit the endcaps to the fascia

Press the pegs of one endcap into the open channels at one end of the fascia. Fit the second endcap at the other end.

    Check: Both endcaps seated

  12. Hang the fascia

Hook the top lip of the fascia onto the upper hooks of the shade brackets. Lower the fascia's bottom edge past the shade and hook its bottom lip onto the lower tab of each bracket.

Check: Fascia engaged at every attachment point on both brackets

Warning: Fascia wider than 48 in (1219 mm) needs two people, and possibly two ladders or lifts

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045929
  • Risk of falling objects: follow the mounting instructions
  • Failing to follow the mounting instructions can cause minor to moderate injury
  • Use only Lutron brackets, controls and power supplies
  • Install to all local and national electrical codes
  • Keep enough clearance between the moving shade and any object
  • Mount fixed controls, and keep remote controls, out of the reach of children
  • Do not run a shade that shows visible wear or damage

Count the top back cover screw pairs from 045929

Lutron document 045929 spaces the mounting screw pairs along the top back cover: one at each end, at least 1.5 in (38 mm) in from the end. The rest sit at most 24 in (610 mm) apart.

Enter the top back cover width to count the mounting screw pairs along the top back cover.

Requirements Lutron states in 045929

What the guide requires for a Sivoia QS Roller 64 shade before and during installation:

Bracket load
Each shade bracket must be fixed to blocking or other structural material with fasteners that support 250 lb (113.4 kg)
Operating environment
32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C), 0 to 90% humidity non-condensing, indoor use only
Screws per shade bracket
Four mounting screws in each bracket, with or without the top back cover. The supplied self-drilling screws suit solid wood only
Bracket-to-bracket distance
Tube width plus 1.5 in (38 mm). The idler spring compresses to about 50% of its travel at the correct distance
Idler compression check
With the shade in the brackets the exposed idler shoulder should measure about 3/8 in (9.5 mm). More or less means the brackets need moving
Cable left exposed
12 to 18 in (30 to 45 cm), exiting the wall, header or jamb on the drive side. Wall entry as high as possible, header entry as close to the wall as possible
Top back cover cable hole
At least 1.5 in (38 mm) from the end of the cover. Jamb entry needs no hole because the bracket has a cutout at its upper rear
Top back cover screws
  • Two screws (not included) at each end
  • At least a pair every 24 in (610 mm)
  • Each at least 1.5 in (38 mm) from the ends
Two-person lift
Shades and fascia wider than 48 in (1219 mm) need two people, one at each end, and may need two ladders or lifts
Upper limit
Set so the bottom bar hangs below the fascia and top back cover when the shade is fully raised
Shims
Top back cover shims go between the mounting surface and the cover only, never between the cover and the brackets. A twisted or tilted cover can cause fabric rub, telescoping or noisy running
Control buttons
The drive-end square mounting yoke is turned so the control buttons face the front, reachable from the room side. Drive cables leave through the upper or lower yoke notches
Fascia fitting
Endcap pegs press into the open channels at each fascia end. The fascia's top lip hangs on the brackets' upper hooks and its bottom lip engages the lower bracket tab
