Installation walk-through for 045618

Lutron document 045618 gives 13 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • 1/4 in (6 mm) hex-head driver
  • 6 in (152 mm) extension, recommended
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Power drill
  • Tape measure
  • Level

Fixings

  • Self-drilling screws, with the kits, for a pocket ceiling over solid wood
  • 2 screws per single-mount universal bracket
  • 4 screws per dual-mount bracket
  • Bracket shims (single-mount kit) and cable tie and anchor (each kit)
  • Pocket fasteners, installer's choice for the surface and load, in pairs
  1. Check the parts and read the notes

Lutron lists the shade, the pocket, the optional endcaps and flap, and the single-mount or dual-mount bracket kits. The single-mount kit adds bracket shims.

Bracket kits may be packed inside the shade box or apart from it. Gather the hex-head driver, Phillips screwdriver, drill, tape measure and level.

Check: All parts present, including any bracket kits packed in the shade box

Warning: Risk of falling objects: follow every mounting instruction

  2. Fit the endcaps, if ordered

Slide the two tabs of each endcap into the pocket until the endcap is flush with the outside. Friction holds it, so no fasteners are needed.

Check: Endcap flush with the pocket end

  3. Check the pocket orientation

Compare the pocket with the section 2.2 drawings. The drawings show a regular roll and a reverse roll shade, with the flap hanger and the glass side marked.

Confirm the flap hanger sits where the drawing for the ordered roll direction shows it.

Check: Pocket turned to match the ordered roll direction

  4. Pre-drill the pocket for the cable

Drill a cable hole at the drive side, clear of the bracket position and of shade travel. Make it large enough to adjust the pocket later without pinching the wire.

For a single-mount shade, Lutron suggests a ceiling hole or a rear wall hole near the pocket end. For a dual-mount shade, mark the pocket or jamb through the cable-entry holes in the dual-mount bracket.

Clearance: Ceiling entry 1 1/2 in (38 mm) from the pocket end and 1/2 in (13 mm) from the rear wall. Rear wall entry 1 1/2 in (38 mm) from the pocket end and 1/2 in (13 mm) from the ceiling.

Check: Hole at the drive side and clear of the bracket location

  5. Set the pocket level and plumb

Shim where the mounting surface is irregular so the pocket sits level and untwisted, with both walls plumb. Between two jambs or walls, leave a gap at each end for thermal expansion before fixing.

Keep checking the pocket ceiling and walls along the whole length as the work goes on.

Clearance: 1/8 in (3 mm) at each end between jambs or walls

Check: Pocket level, untwisted, walls plumb

Warning: Without the end gap the pocket may buckle

  6. Fasten the pocket

Drive fasteners in pairs through the pocket ceiling into a solid structural member, one pair at least every 24 in (610 mm). Set each fastener within 1 in (25 mm) of the front or rear wall.

Keep 3 in (76 mm) clear at each end and at any other bracket position. The installer chooses fasteners that suit the surface and carry the components and operating load.

Clearance: Pairs 24 in (610 mm) max. apart; 1 in (25 mm) max. from the walls; 3 in (76 mm) min. clear at the ends

Check: Fasteners in pairs, never in one row

Warning: A single row or zig-zag of screws lets the pocket twist and its walls lean

  7. Mark the bracket locations

Mark both bracket positions in the pocket, centered over the window, at a bracket-to-bracket distance of tube width plus 1 1/2 in (38 mm). The idler spring compresses as the shade goes in, which is why the shade looks longer than the gap.

Leave room so the fabric cannot rub on the trim, window or top treatment.

    Clearance: Bracket-to-bracket = tube width + 1 1/2 in (38 mm)

Check: Marks centered over the window

Warning: Never take bracket positions from the pocket or from the uninstalled shade

  8. Fix the shade brackets

Center a single-mount universal bracket on the aligning ribs of the pocket ceiling and fix it with 2 screws. Set a dual-mount bracket with its closed back to the pocket wall opposite the flap hanger.

With no flap, either wall will do; fix it with 4 screws. The supplied self-drilling screws suit a pocket ceiling over solid wood; pre-drill where needed.

Check: Brackets tight and at the marks

Warning: The installer must choose fasteners able to carry the shade's operating load

  9. Set the drive end

At the drive end, turn the square mounting yoke so the drive control buttons face down. The buttons are then reached from below the pocket; route the drive wiring through the room-side or window-side notch.

Check: Buttons face down; wiring sits in a notch

  10. Hang the shade

Fit the idler-end yoke over the bracket mounting tabs and behind the head of the retaining screw. Press the shade toward the idler bracket to compress the idler.

Then fit the drive-end yoke over its tabs and behind its retaining screw head. For dual mount, repeat with the second shade.

Check: Both yokes engaged on the tabs with the lower notch round the retaining screw

  11. Check and secure the shade

Measure the bracket-to-bracket distance with the shade in place. Move a bracket if it is out of tolerance, so the idler sits at about half its travel.

Check the shade is level and centered on the opening. Tighten the retaining screw at each end, and at both ends of the second shade for dual mount.

    Clearance: Tube width + 1 1/2 in (38 mm) ± 1/8 in (3 mm)

Check: Idler compressed to about 50% of its travel; shade level and centered

  12. Wire the shade and set limits

Follow the enclosed Lutron document 045520, Sivoia QS Basic Wiring and Setup, to wire the shade and set its limits. Run the shade up and down several times and correct anything that interferes with it.

Check: Shade travels freely through several full cycles

  13. Hang the pocket flap, if ordered

Hang the flap on the flap hanger. Confirm it does not touch the fabric or get in the way of shade travel.

Check: Flap clear of the fabric
