Installation walk-through for 045488

Lutron document 045488 gives five steps, in the document's order, after the fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Fixings

  • Power cord supplied, or an approved cord with an IEC C13 connector
  • Cord: 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) 3-conductor, 300 V, 140 °F (60 °C)
  • Cord length 6 ft (1.83 m) to 10 ft (3 m)
  • Fasteners suited to the mounting surface, through the tabs (optional)
  • One twisted, shielded pair of 22 AWG (0.5 mm²), communication link
  • Power and common conductors sized from the run length table
  • Conductor sizes: 12 AWG (4.0 mm²), 16 AWG (1.5 mm²) or 18 AWG (1.0 mm²)
  1. Mount the power supply (optional)

Fix the supply through its mounting tabs with fasteners that suit the surface, tightened by hand.

Lutron recommends a location that stays accessible. The supply must not interfere with the window treatment or any other moving device.

Check: Supply reachable later and clear of the shade's travel

Warning: Hand tighten only; no power tool on the fasteners

  2. Prepare the conductors

Strip 1/4 in (6 mm) of insulation from each conductor. Tighten every terminal screw firmly to 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m) as each wire is landed.

    Clearance: Strip 1/4 in (6 mm); torque 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m)

Check: No insulation inside the terminal block

  3. Connect the drive or the power draw units

Land the power and common wires on the matching 35 V and COM terminals. In a wired control installation, land the communication wires on the matching MUX and MUX terminals.

A wireless control installation leaves those terminals empty.

    Clearance: 35 V and COM run, one drive: 250 ft (75 m) on 12 AWG (4.0 mm²), 100 ft (30 m) on 16 AWG (1.5 mm²). On 18 AWG (1.0 mm²), 50 ft (15 m).

Check: One drive and at most one PDU, or up to 8 PDUs with no shade

Warning: +35 V is never connected between devices that supply power draw units

  4. Connect further supplies on the link (optional)

Several supplies, each with its own devices, may be daisy-chained along the wired communication link. Land the incoming link wires on one side of the pass-through and the outgoing wires on the other.

Clearance: All QS link wiring in the system not over 2000 ft (610 m)

Check: Only the communication link joins the supplies

Warning: No +35 V conductor runs from one supply to the next

  5. Connect the AC cord

Use the cord supplied, or any approved cord that suits the installation site and meets the IEC C13 cord requirements. Plug the cord into the supply first, then into a standard receptacle.

    Clearance: Cord 6 ft (1.83 m) minimum, 10 ft (3 m) maximum

    Check: Cord is 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) 3-conductor, rated 300 V and 140 °F (60 °C)

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045488
  • All wiring and circuit protection must meet national and local electrical codes
  • Indoor use only, in 32 °F to 104 °F (0 °C to 40 °C)
  • 0 to 90% humidity without condensation
  • Never connect +35 V between devices that supply power draw units
  • Secondary wiring: CL2, CL2P, CL2R, CL2X, or equal or better in rating
  • Equal or better means electrical, mechanical and flammability ratings
