Installation walk-through for 045528

Lutron document 045528 gives nine steps, in the document's order, after the fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Fixings

  • Fasteners suited to the surface, rated for 50 lb (23 kg), not provided
  • Strain relief device for each knockout used (not included)
  • Ten 4-pin output terminal blocks (provided, packed separately)
  • Two 3-pin link terminal blocks (provided, packed separately)
  1. Prepare the panel

Loosen the four front cover screws, slide the cover upward and lift it off. Take out the two line voltage shield screws and lift the shield out of the enclosure.

  2. Mount the panel

Pick a spot that stays accessible; no mounting hardware is supplied. Surface mount on the three keyholes in the back, or recess mount on a horizontal board between the studs.

A recess mount fixes to the right-hand stud and the board.

Clearance: Fasteners rated for a 50 lb (23 kg) load

  3. Bring in the line feed

Remove a knockout near the input terminal blocks and fit a strain relief. Run the feed to the input terminals at the top left of the enclosure.

    Clearance: 10 AWG to 14 AWG (4.0 mm² to 2.5 mm²) feed; breaker 15 A minimum, 20 A maximum

Warning: Risk of electric shock: switch the supply breaker off and lock it there before touching the terminal block.

  4. Connect line, neutral and ground

Strip each conductor and insert line, neutral and ground in the order drawn. Tighten each screw with no insulation inside the terminal, then tighten the strain relief.

    Clearance: 5/16 in (8 mm) strip; 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m) torque

Check: No insulation inside the terminal block.

  5. Refit the line voltage shield

Put the shield back with its original screws so all line voltage wiring and connections sit behind it.

Check: Every line voltage connection is enclosed behind the shield.

Warning: Never energize or operate the panel without the line voltage shield in place.

  6. Connect the window treatments or lighting devices

Lutron recommends making the last connection at the device after the panel is in. Run each device cable through a strain relief in a left-side knockout.

Wire COM and V+ into a 4-pin block, adding MUX and MUX for wired communication. Then plug the block into an output.

Clearance: 1/4 in (6 mm) strip; 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m) torque; run length within the output table

Check: Shade limits and free travel checked right after power-up.

Warning: Risk of electric shock and fire: never interconnect power output terminals.

  7. Link further panels and QS devices

Run 3-conductor cable from the other panel or Sivoia QS device through a strain relief by the Link receptacles. Wire COM, MUX and MUX into a 3-pin block and plug it into a Link receptacle.

    Clearance: 1/4 in (6 mm) strip; 5 in-lb (0.5 N·m); 2000 ft (610 m) maximum on the 3-pin link

Warning: Panels link only through the 3-pin communication link, never through the 4-pin outputs.

  8. Read the LEDs

With power modules fitted, a link diagnostic LED on or flashing means devices are talking; off means not. An output LED on is normal, off means a short or a failed module, and flashing means an overload.

Check: After clearing any fault, tap Clear Alerts to resume operation.

  9. Verify communication

On All Shades Open, tap, hold 5 seconds, release, then tap and hold 5 seconds again. LED devices flash and motorized window treatments wiggle.

The test times out after 10 minutes, or a 5-second hold exits.

Check: Any device that does not react has its power and communication wiring checked.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 045528
  • All wiring and circuit protection to national and local electrical codes
  • Some sites need a readily accessible disconnect outside the panel
  • A qualified electrician must install the panel.
  • Indoor use only; the panel is not for phase-to-phase installations.
  • QS link wiring is NEC Class 2 / PELV; keep circuit separation and protection
  • V+ terminals must never be joined between outputs.

Questions about document 045528

The answers come from Lutron document 045528 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 045528?

Lutron's one-page Sivoia QS smart panel installation guide, P/N 045528 revision E, dated 11/2017. The panel is a wall-mounted enclosure that holds WIN-PS-5CC-R power modules.

Which revision of 045528 is current?

Rev E, dated November 2017, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 15 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 045528 cover?

Lutron Sivoia QS roller shades. Lutron document 045528 refers readers to document 045550.

How many shades can one smart panel output feed?

Lutron document 045528 feeds one drive plus up to 1 PDU per output, or shared outputs. Shared outputs take up to 1 PDU and shorter runs.

  • Two Roller 64 to 30 sq ft (2.75 sq m) each
  • Three Roller 64 to 20 sq ft (1.80 sq m) each
  • Two Roller 100 to 50 sq ft (4.60 sq m) each

What circuit breaker and feed wire does the panel need?

Lutron document 045528 calls for a feed breaker of 15 A minimum, set by inrush current, and 20 A maximum. Feed wire is 10 AWG to 14 AWG (4.0 mm² to 2.5 mm²), installed by a qualified electrician.

How are several smart panels linked together?

Lutron document 045528 links panels only through the 3-pin communication link (COM, MUX and MUX), never through the 4-pin outputs. That link carries at most 2000 ft (610 m), with 100 devices per QS link.

What does a flashing output LED mean?

Lutron document 045528 reads a flashing output LED as an overload, from a wiring error or a blocked shade. Once the fault is cleared, the Clear Alerts button resumes operation.

An LED that is off means a short circuit or a failed power module.

Can the smart panel be recessed into a stud wall?

Yes: Lutron document 045528 describes a recess mount on a horizontal board between the studs as a bottom support. The panel fixes to the right-hand stud and the board; no mounting hardware is supplied.
