Installation walk-through for 045993

Lutron document 045993 gives 15 steps, in the document's order, after the tools and fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Power drill/driver
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • T20 Torx driver
  • 4 in (102 mm) or longer extension, recommended
  • Phillips #2 or 1/4 in (6 mm) hex
  • 3/16 in (5 mm) drill bit (jamb mount)
  • 1/8 in (#31, 3 mm) drill bit, optional
  • D-size alkaline batteries (available separately)

Fixings

  • 4 x #8 x 2 in (51 mm) T20 Torx drive screws (provided)
  • 4 provided #8 x 2.5 in (64 mm) screws, Phillips or 1/4 in (6 mm) hex
  • 2 bracket spacers, outside mount above trim only, when ordered
  • Spacers available on request
  • 2 in (51 mm) #8 flat head screws for jamb mounting (provided by others)
  • Angled spacer for angled trim (not provided)
  • Blocking where the structure needs it
  1. Check the parts, tools and batteries

Lay out the assembled shade and the left and right bracket assemblies, each a shade bracket on a mounting bracket. The screws are four #8 x 2 in (51 mm) T20 Torx and four #8 x 2.5 in (64 mm) Phillips and hex.

Two spacers come if the above-trim mount was ordered. Have a drill/driver, tape measure, level, pencil and a T20 Torx driver with a 4 in (102 mm) or longer extension.

D-size alkaline batteries are bought separately.

Check: Mount-specific tools on hand: Phillips #2 or 1/4 in (6 mm) hex drive for above trim. Jamb mount: 3/16 in (5 mm) bit and #8 flat head screws.

  2. Separate the bracket assemblies

On the right assembly, push up the release tab of the shade bracket and slide it off the mounting bracket. Keep it for fitting the shade brackets in step 7.

On the left assembly, push up the release tab and slide the shade bracket out. Press its release tab to part it from the mounting bracket.

Check: Two mounting brackets free, two shade brackets set aside

  3. Inside mount: fix the brackets to the header

Position both mounting brackets using the inside mount option, mark the holes and check the marks with a level.

Mark the screw positions and drill optional pilot holes. Drive the screws up through the top of each bracket into the header or blocking.

Clearance: Jamb at least 3.75 in (95 mm) deep for a full recess, 3.75 in (95 mm) clear in front of the brackets. Optional pilot holes 1/8 in (3 mm), 2 in (50 mm) deep.

Check: Marks are level from side to side

Warning: Mount only to blocking or suitable structure, 150 lbs (68 kg) per bracket

  4. Inside jamb mount: fix the brackets

Drill out the jamb mounting holes on each bracket with a 3/16 in (5 mm) bit.

Mark the screw positions on the jamb and drill optional pilot holes. Drive #8 flat head screws, supplied by others, through the drilled holes into the structure.

Clearance: 3.75 in (95 mm) clear in front of the brackets; pilot 1/8 in (3 mm) to 2 in (50 mm) deep

Check: Brackets sit level on both jambs

  5. Outside mount on trim: fix the brackets

Position and level the brackets, then mark the screw positions on the trim. Drill optional pilot holes and drive the screws into the blocking.

If the trim is angled, place an angled spacer, not provided, behind each bracket and pre-drill it as needed.

Clearance: 3.75 in (95 mm) clear in front of the brackets

Check: Marks level from side to side on the trim

  6. Above trim: fix the brackets with spacers

Position and level the brackets and mark the screw positions on the wall. Attach a spacer to the back of each bracket where the trim projects.

Drill any optional pilot holes, then drive the screws into the blocking.

Clearance: Spacers clear trim up to 1/2 in (13 mm) thick; 3.75 in (95 mm) clear in front of the brackets

Check: Spacers are single, never stacked

Warning: Thicker trim needs other shims, spacers or blocking with suitable fasteners

  7. Fit the shade brackets

Pinch the battery tray release and pull the tray fully out of the drive. Press the left shade bracket onto the drive, rails away from the shade, until both retaining tabs engage.

Clip the right shade bracket back into the right mounting bracket.

Check: Left shade bracket held by the top and bottom retaining tabs

  8. Load the batteries

Fill the tray with fresh D-cell alkaline batteries. UP arrow toward the ceiling, push the pointed end into the drive opening, open face away from the shade button.

Push until the tray seats, then pull back gently without pressing the release to confirm the latch. The tray may go in after hanging if the room allows.

Clearance: 14.0 in (356 mm) to the nearest wall or obstruction for tray access

    Check: Shade button flashes red/green

Warning: The shade may power up before the tray is fully seated; keep pressing until it latches

  9. Hang the shade

Tilt the shade at least 30 degrees from horizontal. Press the axle into the top of the right bracket socket, pulling the shade end down lightly until it catches.

Line up the rails and slide the left shade bracket into the left mounting bracket.

Clearance: At least 30° from horizontal

Check: The shade sits centered in the bracket once aligned and level

Warning: Insert the battery tray before fully closing the left end if it is not in yet

  10. Choose the control method

With a Caséta smart hub, program and control the shade in the Lutron App. Without a system, assign a Pico remote as in the next steps, repeating for each shade.

Warning: Switching control type requires a factory reset first

  11. Put the shade in service position

Push up the release tab under the left shade bracket and slide the bracket forward. The battery tray and the shade button are then exposed.

In close quarters, where the tray cannot come fully out, take the shade down to change batteries. Separate the left bracket assembly as in step 2, then reverse the hanging in step 9.

Check: Shade button and tray are reachable

  12. Assign a Pico remote

Tap the shade button until it lights solid green. Press and hold the Pico Close button for about 10 seconds.

Check: Shade button flashes green and turns off

  13. Set the upper and lower limits (optional)

Tap the shade button to solid green. Hold Open and Raise together about 10 seconds until the button flashes green and stays lit.

Move the shade with Raise and Lower. Hold Open about 10 seconds for the upper limit, or Close about 10 seconds for the lower limit.

Check: Limit stored: the shade button flashes green, then turns off

  14. Save a favorite position (optional)

Move the shade to the wanted position with Raise and Lower. Press and hold the Favorite button for 6 seconds.

Check: Favorite stored: the shade button flashes green, then turns off

  15. Restore factory defaults

Tap the shade button three times quickly and hold on the third tap until the LED flashes green rapidly. Straight away tap three more times quickly until the LED flashes green rapidly, then red/green three times, and goes off.

Check: LED turns off after three red/green flashes

Questions about document 045993

The answers come from Lutron document 045993 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 045993?

Lutron's ten-page guide to the Serena Open Roll Shade, dated February 2026, for Pico remote or Caséta smart hub control.

Which revision of 045993 is current?

Rev B, dated February 2026, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 045993 cover?

Lutron Serena roller shades. Lutron document 045993 refers readers to document 048561.

Can the Serena Open Roll shade go in a pocket or recess?

No: Lutron document 045993 rules out a pocket or recess, because batteries must be changeable without demounting the shade.

A fully recessed inside mount needs a jamb at least 3.75 in (95 mm) deep. The brackets also need 3.75 in (95 mm) clear in front of them.

What load must each bracket carry?

Lutron document 045993 makes the installer responsible for fasteners that let each shade bracket support 150 lbs (68 kg). The fasteners go into solid structure, with secure blocking where the structure needs it.

How much room does the battery tray need?

Lutron document 045993 asks for 14.0 in (356 mm) of clearance to the nearest wall or obstruction, so the tray pulls fully out in place. Where that room is missing, the shade comes out of the brackets to change the batteries.

How is a Pico remote assigned to the shade?

Lutron document 045993 has the installer tap the shade button until it lights solid green.

Then press and hold the Pico Close button for about 10 seconds. The assignment is complete when the shade button flashes green and turns off.

Which mounting styles does the Serena Open Roll shade offer?

Lutron document 045993 shows an inside mount, an inside jamb mount, an outside mount on trim and one above trim.

The inside mount screws up into the header and the jamb mount sideways into the jamb. Above-trim spacers clear trim up to 1/2 in (13 mm) thick, and angled trim takes an angled spacer not provided.
