Installation walk-through for 048598

Lutron document 048598 gives nine steps, in the document's order, after the tools it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Tools

  • Measuring tape, robust, undamaged and rigid
  • Digital or laser measuring device (optional)
  1. Wait for final site conditions

Measure only when the site matches install day, since trim, drywall, compound or paint added later can spoil the fit. Measure every window on site, never from drawings.

Check: Finishes around each opening are complete

Warning: Remakes caused by wrong measurements are charged to the installing dealer

  2. Choose and check the measuring tool

Use a robust, rigid, undamaged tape, with two people on long spans. Check laser or digital readings against a tape and reduce each by 1/16 in (1.6 mm).

Clearance: Laser reduction 1/16 in (1.6 mm)

  3. Check the mounting space

Compare the head space and depth with the system's minimum for a single or dual mount. Single mounts run from 3 in (76 mm) for a Roller 20 to 7 in (178 mm) for a Roller 225.

  4. Work out the ordering width

Order inside mounts by bracket-to-bracket width: fabric width plus both light gaps. Specify outside mount to avoid the factory deduction, or to leave room for end caps at 3/8 in (10 mm) narrower than the opening.

Clearance: End caps: 3/16 in (5 mm) per side

  5. Measure inside-mount width

Measure across the top of the jamb at the bracket position and use the smallest width through the jamb depth. Shade types with smaller gaps need top, middle and bottom readings.

Check: The smallest width is the one entered

  6. Measure inside-mount height

Measure header to sill. A roller shade's lower limit absorbs an extra inch or two.

Avoid overstating the height of shades that stack at the top.

  7. Measure an outside mount

Specify height from the top of the hardware to the closed position. Set the width so the fabric meets or slightly overlaps the trim.

Warning: Shades over 120 in (3048 mm) high or with a height to width ratio over 4:1 have larger gaps

  8. Choose the roll direction

Use reverse roll to clear cranks or handles, never with a fascia. Keep one roll direction across a façade.

  9. Fill in the worksheets

Enter shared features once per shade type, then each shade's room mark, quantity, drive side and size. Give bracket-to-bracket or fabric width; the SCT works out the other.

Other warnings Lutron prints in 048598
  • Never measure from drawings or plans; measure on site at every window
  • Remakes caused by wrong measurements are at the installing dealer's cost

Facts Lutron states in 048598

The values Lutron document 048598 states, as published:

When to measure
Final measurements at every window on site once conditions match install day, never from drawings. The installing dealer pays for remakes caused by wrong measurements.
Laser and digital tools
Reduce the reading by 1/16 in (1.6 mm). The SCT typically takes sizes to the nearest 1/16 in (1.6 mm).
Minimum mounting space, single shade
Height and depth for a single shade:
  • Roller 20: 3 in (76 mm)
  • Roller 64: 3 1/2 in (89 mm)
  • Roller 100, 150, 300 and Triathlon: 5 in (127 mm)
  • Roller 225: 7 in (178 mm)
Minimum mounting space, dual mount
Height by depth for a dual mount:
  • Roller 20 and 64: 9 in (229 mm) by 6 in (152 mm)
  • Roller 225: 14 in (356 mm) by 8 in (203 mm)
  • Triathlon: no dual mount
Light gap per side
  • Inside mount, Roller 20 and 64: 3/4 in (19 mm)
  • Inside mount, Roller 100 to 300: 13/16 in (21 mm)
  • Triathlon: 9/16 in (14 mm), or 11/16 in (17 mm) with fascia
  • Outside mount: typically 1/16 in (1.6 mm) smaller, except Roller 20 and 64
Ordering width
Bracket-to-bracket width equals fabric width plus both light gaps. Inside-mount shades are ordered by bracket-to-bracket width, not fabric width.
Factory deduction
Inside mounts lose 1/16 in (1.6 mm) on each side, 1/8 in (3.2 mm) in all, except Roller 20 and 64. Specifying outside mount avoids it.
End caps, inside mount
Specify as outside mount 3/8 in (10 mm) narrower than the opening. The light gap becomes 15/16 in (24 mm) per side.
Larger gaps
Shades 120 in (3048 mm) and taller, or with a height to width ratio of 4:1 or more, get larger gaps. Custom larger gaps are possible on most systems except Triathlon and Triathlon WIDR.
Inside-mount width readings
Roller shades need one reading at the bracket position across the top of the jamb, since their gaps are at least 1/2 in (13 mm). Use the smallest width if it varies through the jamb depth.
Height rules
Header to sill. An inch or two extra is harmless on a roller shade but not on shades that stack at the top.
Tube wraps
Every roller shade has 1 1/2 extra wraps on the tube
Outside mount
Height from the top of the hardware to the closed position. Fabric edges meet or slightly overlap the trim.
Roll direction
Reverse roll clears cranks and handles but cannot take a fascia. One roll direction per façade.

Questions about document 048598

The answers come from Lutron document 048598 and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron document 048598?

Lutron's six-page Application Note 598, printed #598 on its pages, with two Shade Configuration Tool (SCT) worksheets.

  • Sivoia QS and QS Wireless: Roller 20, 64, 100, 150, 225, 300 (non-coupled)
  • Triathlon and Triathlon WIDR
  • Lutron manual and custom roller shades

Which revision of 048598 is current?

Rev B, dated August 2017, is the revision Lutron publishes. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which roller shades does 048598 cover?

Lutron Sivoia QS roller shades. Lutron document 048598 refers readers to document 3683304.

How much space does a roller shade need above the window?

At least 3 in (76 mm) of height and depth for a single Roller 20, per Lutron document 048598.

  • Roller 64: 3 1/2 in (89 mm)
  • Roller 100, 150, 300 and Triathlon: 5 in (127 mm)
  • Roller 225: 7 in (178 mm)

What light gap should be expected on each side?

An inside-mount gap of 3/4 in (19 mm) per side on Roller 20 and 64, per Lutron document 048598.

  • Roller 100 to 300: 13/16 in (21 mm)
  • Triathlon: 9/16 in (14 mm), or 11/16 in (17 mm) with fascia
  • Outside mount: typically 1/16 in (1.6 mm) smaller, except Roller 20 and 64

Should an inside-mount shade be ordered by fabric width or bracket-to-bracket width?

Bracket-to-bracket width, per Lutron document 048598, never fabric width for an inside mount. The bracket-to-bracket dimension is the fabric width plus the light gap on each side.

The Shade Configuration Tool works out whichever value is not entered.

What allowance does Lutron make for a laser measuring tool?

Reduce a digital or laser reading by 1/16 in (1.6 mm), per Lutron document 048598. Check the tool against a rigid tape until it is trusted.

Two people may be needed on long spans with a tape.

Can a reverse roll shade have a fascia?

No: Lutron document 048598 says reverse roll clears cranks, handles and window hardware but cannot take a fascia. Lutron document 048598 recommends one roll direction for every shade on a façade.
