Installation walk-through for this Sivoia QS note

This Sivoia QS note gives four steps, in the document's order, after the fixings it lists.

The clearance, the check and the warning under a step are the document's own.

Fixings

  • Omron MY2N-AC110/120(S) double throw relay (suggested for 120 V)
  • Omron PYF08A-E relay socket
  • seeTouch QS keypad
  • Three 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) conductors from the relay to the keypad inputs
  1. Wire the keypad to the QS link

Connect the seeTouch QS keypad to the Sivoia QS communication link. Lutron's battery backup note sends the installer to the keypad's instruction sheet for this connection.

Warning: Turn off the circuit breaker or remove the main fuse before starting, or serious injury can result.

  2. Wire the normally closed output

Run the relay's normally closed output to the keypad input that should act when power is lost. To have the shades open in a power cut, for example, land it on the keypad's open input.

Clearance: (3) 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) conductors: common, close input, open input

Warning: Never connect mains voltage to the keypad's low-voltage terminals.

  3. Wire the normally open output, if wanted

Use the relay's normally open output in the same way when the shades should also move as power comes back. Land it on the keypad input for that movement.

  4. Feed the relay coil from the mains

Connect the relay's input to the AC mains that are not on the battery backup. The coil then drops out only when the mains fail, while the UPS keeps the shades powered.

Check: With mains on, the coil is energized and the normally open contact is made. When power fails, the normally closed contact makes and the keypad moves its assigned EDUs.

Warning: Wire to National Electric Code methods and confirm local requirements with the electrical inspector.

Other warnings printed in this Sivoia QS note
  • Breaker off or main fuse out before work on the power line: serious injury risk
  • No mains voltage on low-voltage terminals; wrong wiring can injure or damage
  • Wire to National Electric Code methods; check local code with the inspector
  • A modified sine UPS overheats the transformer on battery and may damage both

Facts Lutron states in this Sivoia QS note

The values this Sivoia QS note states, as published:

Purpose
Move Sivoia QS shades and draperies during a power failure, for privacy or security, with supplies on a UPS
Voltage
Same voltage as the power panel or transformers it feeds: 120 V in the USA or 230 V in Europe
Waveform
Pure sine wave output required, because Sivoia QS is powered by a low voltage transformer
Modified sine risk
On battery a modified sine UPS overheats the transformer, which vibrates or buzzes, and may damage both units
Power delivery
More VA than the transformers it powers: at least 800 VA for a QS Smart Panel Power Supply
Supply loads
QS Smart Panel Power Supply under 800 VA and QS Individual Power Supply under 100 VA
Recommended UPS (US)
APC Smart-UPS 1500, model SUA1500, a 120 V pure sine wave unit
Runtime of the SUA1500
  • About 5 hours at minimum load
  • 3 hours at 100 VA
  • 10 minutes at 800 VA
Runtime per movement
Each movement takes about 15 minutes off the 5 hour runtime, assuming:
  • A 30 second travel
  • A full Smart Panel of 10 shades
Automatic operation
A seeTouch QS keypad plus a double throw high voltage relay or contactor
Suggested relay (120 V)
Omron MY2N-AC110/120(S) relay in an Omron PYF08A-E socket
Keypad wiring
Three 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) conductors: common, close input (bottom button) and open input (top button)
Electrical safety
  • Breaker off or main fuse out before any work
  • No mains voltage on low-voltage terminals
  • National Electric Code wiring methods and local code

Questions about this Sivoia QS note

The answers come from this Sivoia QS note and New Way's record of it.

What is Lutron's Battery Backup and Sivoia QS note?

Lutron's three-page note, under a 2010 copyright line with no document number, revision or date printed. Lutron works the example on a 120 V UPS for the US market and names no 230 V model.

Which revision of this Sivoia QS note is current?

Lutron publishes this Sivoia QS note without a revision letter. New Way checked it against assets.lutron.com on 16 October 2026.

Which roller shades does this Sivoia QS note cover?

Lutron Sivoia QS roller shades.

Which UPS waveform does a Sivoia QS system need?

Lutron's battery backup note requires a pure sine wave UPS. On battery, a modified sine wave overheats the low voltage transformer and may damage both the UPS and the transformer.

How much UPS capacity does a QS Smart Panel Power Supply need?

Lutron's battery backup note asks for a UPS that supplies more VA than the transformers it feeds. A QS Smart Panel Power Supply needs at least 800 VA; a QS Individual Power Supply loads under 100 VA.

Can the shades open by themselves in a power cut?

Lutron's battery backup note says yes: wire the relay's normally closed output to the seeTouch QS keypad's open input.

The normally open output, on another input, moves the shades when power returns. The relay coil feeds from mains that are not battery backed.

Which relay does Lutron suggest?

Lutron's battery backup note suggests an Omron MY2N-AC110/120(S) double throw relay in an Omron PYF08A-E socket for 120 V installations. The relay wires to the keypad with three 18 AWG (1.0 mm²) conductors.

How long will the shades run on battery?

Lutron's battery backup note estimates about 5 hours on the APC Smart-UPS 1500 at minimum load.

  • 3 hours at 100 VA, 10 minutes at 800 VA
  • Full panel of 10 shades: about 15 minutes off per movement
